France Wild Side and Dario Argento

Announced for October 2010:
- Inferno
- The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
- Cat o'Nine Tails
- Phenomena
- Tenebrae

The publisher announced that the films have been remastered in HD from the original negatives and that the transfers were supervised by the director and the cinematographers involved. Hopefully, these remasters are not as "violent" than Suspiria, which had many shared at the time of its release.

Will these have forced French subtitles? I hope not.

I'd be very interested in these Argento movies if they are released on Blu-ray. The article is not very clear about which titles would be released on BD and which only on DVD. Wild Side Video hasn't release Suspiria on BD either though they released the remastered version on DVD.

It seems that Suspiria, Inferno and Tenebre will be released, at least, according to FNAC:

Let's hope for original language soundtracks and optional English subtitles.

That is a seriously cool Tenebre cover.

Hope these don't have forced subs...

Dare we hope for a decent transfer after the last disappointment. Surely they're bound to get it right sooner or later.

I will be very curious to see their new Suspiria BD, but it is a shame that there will only be French subtitling available, as it would be very interesting to hear and understand the Italian DTS-HD MA tracks and the French DTS-HD MA Mono as well. I sincerely hope a U.S. distributor (Anchor Bay?) will release a worthy edition, preferably with at least the Italian and English tracks in lossless.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record:

Not only that but those French subtitles are also likely to be forced upon the English language version. For all 3 releases. I ordered the Tenebrae bd so if no-one else posts first, I can at least comment on that one release. Even with forced subs, I'd rather view a hd version of Tenebrae (hope it's TRULY uncut like the Dutch dvd).

In the link you provided, it's said for Suspiria : "Master restauré à partir d’une nouvelle source HD" (restored master from a new HD source).

The previous edition by Wild Side of Suspiria on DVD provoked a controversy because the master (although approved by Argento an director of photography Luciano Tovoli) was judged too bright and having too strong colors (you can see a comparison here between region-2 Wild Side and region-1 Anchor Bay DVDs). I hope Wild Side will use a more color-balanced master for this BD release.

About forced subtitles, I think that only French subtitles will be avalaible, and they will be forced on non French speaking tracks.
Forcing French subtitles often happens for legal reasons: independent companies like Wild Side don't own the movies they release on DVD or Blu-ray: they have to pay to have the rights to publish movies in Blu-ray, but they also pay for the audio tracks they use, and they have the rights to sell the discs only on some territories. That's why they have to force the subtitles on non French tracks, to make it more difficult to sell the disc outside France (because the distributor may wants to sell the rights to another compagny outside France).
With big studios like Warner, Disney, Paramount, etc., they usually own the rights of the movies they're producing on Blu-ray, so the audio tracks or subtitles are not an issue because wherever the disc is sold, the money always goes to the same studio.

Re: Suspiria and the colour. I think that it's quite often a case of simply incorrect colours rather than too strong. And the blown out contrast. Something technical went wrong between Tovali approving a version and how that version could be transferred to the dvd/bd format. On the plus side, the sometimes incredibly high contrast/wrong colours issue affects only, say, around several per cent of the UK bd release. I heavily suspect that this French release will look roughly the same, despite the new HD master claims.

You suspect correctly, I got rid of my Wild Side DVD version of Suspiria ages ago so can't recall too well but doesn't look like too much of a difference from that despite being in HD.
Can comprehend French so nice to get the supplements back otherwise just looks like identical package to 3 disc DVD just plonked on a single Blu Ray.

Mind you, what little consolation there may be is that despite being labelled Region B is in fact Region Free.

I was trying to find these for a while on amazon.fr.
so frustrating cause I had no idea they were at present fnac exclusives.
I'll wait for more info and a wider release.
I'm not as familiar with the color of Suspiria, and thus thought the UK bd looked fantastic.
although the lack of English subs is a joke.
but still, it looks great to me.
and I think this is a perfect example of where if you don't know what the movie originally may have looked like on dvd you aren't as bothered by apparent color timing changes.
I was completely floored by all the color, and thought the entire disc was very powerful.
but other bds that have had similar changes I may have hated because I knew what looked different.
It's all about how familiar you are with the material before a new release comes out.

Tenebre looks stunning on bd - seriously...

Massive upgrade from the dvds which have always looked horribly washed out.

There are forced French subs when English or Italian are selected. It will also play in region A machines.

re: Italian and UK release of SUSPIRIA:

Overall, I really like what they've done, but I hope that for the Wild Side release they at least address the really bad areas of the film:

(1) most of the white aspects of the movie are blown out (especially a number of scenes regarding Jessica Harper's dress), especially one scene in particular when Jessica is talking to Joan Bennet about the blue iris near the end - you can barely see their faces due to how blown out the contrast is.

(2) the outside of the Tans Academy is WAY too "hot pink" as opposed to red. There is a scene where the blind piano player arrives (right before the boy is attacked by his dog) which will literally cause your eyes to bleed.

If they were to keep the overall print but just tone it down a bit, and color correct the really offending scenes where image detail is obviously blown out, it could be damn near perfect.
