Well, luckily I just received a promotional 50% off coupon for a Barnes & Noble Mother's Day sale on certain items and the Out Of Africa blu ray was one listed, so I'm getting it for 11.00 and free shipping. Flipper disc or not, it's a good deal.

dual sided disc, one side is dvd the other side is the blu ray. Kinda like with dvd where one side would be full screen and the other would be widescreen.

Actually, the common definition here and at other A/V forums, while increasingly popular, is, in fact, incorrect (it reminds me of how people in the South commonly call cicadas "locusts" when they are no such thing). Flipper discs were a product of the early DVD age, when half the movie was on one side of a DVD and, when you reached the end point of that half, you flipped the disc over and finished the film out on the other side of the DVD, where a label is normally found. Rapid improvements in compression made this practice unnecessary for most DVD titles and the exceptions (such as the extended LORD OF THE RINGS) were simply spread across two separate discs, rather than two sides of the same disc. There's no such thing as a Blu-ray flipper disc. What is being described here regarding Universal's new Blu-ray/DVD configuration is a "dual-sided disc", with one side of the disc containing an entire film on a Blu-ray platter and the other side of the disc (what would normally be the label side) containing the same film on a DVD platter. Semantics? Maybe, but for accuracy's sake...

you're correct man, I just was trying not to confuse him by calling a flipper different than a dual sided disc due to so many people just adopting the name "flipper" for the dual sided combo's Uni puts out.

Did you read the reviews for this? It's a questionable purchase even at $11.

How did you get the price down so cheap. I'm using my member discount and the 50% off coupon, but for some reason it's taking 50% off the list price, not the BN.com price. Hmmm.

I just finished watching Traffic and I was pretty satisfied with the transfer. This was never a "great" looking film, but I felt it was a pretty accurate portrayal of how Soderbergh intended it to look.

Is this the only option for these titles in the U.S without importing??? I mean does universal know that there is this much negative response about flippers??

Wow, if those screenshots of Out Of Africa are at all representative of the disc I am appalled. While it is one of my favorite movies, I deeply loathe the DualDisc concept. The last time it was tried was that disastrous DVD/CD combo where the glue came apart. I refuse to buy them.

The screenshots seal the deal for me. Damn shame.

While I partially agree with this statement (the minority is here on this site).

Flippers are a joke. It's a shit format and should never have left the brain of whomever thought it up. Never!
