Kotaku has the most fair review I've read so far on this game.

Nier does have its flaws, but it's not nearly as bad as many reviewers think (most are lazy), and what it does well, it does VERY well (audio design in particular is truly spectacular, and the boss fights are all interesting and memorable). Also, the gripes about the game being too easy are because the reviewers are playing on Easy or Normal.

I'm playing on Hard, and the game has killed me more times than I can count. I don't think I've passed a single boss fight without dying at least once or twice, sometimes many more than that.

In preparation for playing Automata, I started playing though this game and this sentence is a pretty good summary of the game. I got the first ending and the story is starting to get very interesting.

My biggest problem with the game aren't the ugly graphics, bad performance, or repetitive gameplay but the fact that you have to repeat the 2nd half twice in order to get all endings. And since the 2nd half of the game
[Show spoiler]recycles the dungeons of the first half,
it feels like a slog. Still, I'll power through to see if I get to be as blown away by the story as many people seem to have been in the past.

NieR is among my favorite games of all time. I often fight with my self not to order the Japanese version.

I have picked up Drakengard 1 2 & 3 but admit I have not played them.

I look forward to Automata some time in the future
