Default Non-Blue Amaray Cases (Black, Red, Green and more!)

Greetings, Blu-ray fans!

This is a listing of all Blu-rays that come in non-blue Amaray (plastic) cases.

Why care? Well, as a collector, I don't do the figurine thing or Breaking Bad barrel thing but I do like to have unusual or different Blu-rays. In the "format wars" at the beginning of hi-def, Blu-ray cases were blue and HD DVD cases were maroon so you could tell them apart. Which may be fine now for civilians but sometimes it's fun to have The Incredible Hulk in a green case or not have a dark horror flick with dark artwork in bright blue packaging. (I'm a thematic kinda guy.)

In other words, I don't just buy Blu-rays with colored cases, I sometimes buy the cases to go with similarly-colored artwork or a title with a color in it (e.g. The Black Swan). So, I look for colored cases on eBay, and when I get one, I'll put the disc and artwork in a standard case (usually an Eco that I've replaced, but that's another thread) and re-sell it.

So listen to me, buds: blue Blus don't have to make you blue! (Thank you, I'll be here all week.)

Remember, though, standard releases with colored cases are invariably limited editions and may be available only in a first pressing. Thus, they may be harder to find and the image here at blu-ray.com may be of the standard blue Amaray case.

Also, if you're buying a certain color Blu-ray case to use for another title, you might want to verify they hold the same number of discs.

NOTE: Blu-ray.com is a member-supported wiki and information may be incomplete or even false. Kristian Idol and Blu-ray.com bear no responsibility if you spend a lot of time and/or money based on this little list!

Titles linked here go to the Blu-ray.com page so you can find out more information. If you have colored new releases or ones I've missed to tell me about, reply at the end of the thread.

MAROON

Several Blu-rays that I own have predominately maroon artwork, such as Misery and Shakespeare in Love. So I took HD DVD cases, removed the painted logo with Goof Off (or Goo Gone, et al) and exchanged cases. They look great! (I don't own any HD DVDs so there's no need to differentiate.)

Viva HD DVD cases look best because the logo is just painted on the banner. Viva were used by Dreamworks, Paramount, Warner Bros and a few indies.

Universal used Vortex HD DVD cases, where the logo is embossed (raised). So you can remove the paint but it still says "HD DVD" in raised plastic. Up to you if that matters.

You can win HD DVDs for a few bucks on eBay. When searching for HD DVDs, Universal artwork always had a big silver "swoop" at the top and bottom; I avoided those. Remember, too, that you are looking for the best cases; I always asked if they were perfect, without waves or "veins" and sometimes still got ugly ones. If that happens, just re-sell it or recycle.

RED

Red is also great for horror flicks, especially if the art has a lot of crimson.

Also, PS3 Greatest Hits games come in an opaque red case, so you could swap one with an Amaray. I have my Shaun of the Dead in a blood-red PS3 case(!)

Casetopia sells red PS3 cases.

Note: PS3 cases are 14mm wide like a UK case, so the US art is a tiny bit (a millimeter) short at the sides.

PINK

As most cases are somewhat see-through, in certain lighting these may look anywhere from red to fuschia to purple. Buyer beware. (I'm thinking about finding one for Clueless.)

AUSTRALIA
Brokeback Mountain (database page has standard blue case but here is member's image of the AU pink Brokeback release.)
Valentine's Day (Image looks very purple but I'm guessing the UK pic is closer to reality.)

WHITE

By "white" I mean opaque. Not see-through. White. I'd love to put my Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle in a stark white Blu-ray case!

FRANCE
Blue Jasmine
Blueberry (Renegade)
Comme un Chef (The Chef) Or clear?
Her

Buckaroo Bonzai Die 8. Dimension
I Spit on Your Grave (Unrated) Looks opaque

JAPAN
Antarctica (Nankyoku Monogatari)
The Chef (Comme un Chef) Or clear?
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Database image looks pretty white...

FROSTED or CLEAR

Careful, depending on the batch these can look very similar and to some people are interchangeable or even considered "white".

Almost all of Sony's 3D Blu-rays come in a frosted case. They are great for wintry movies like The Thing or It's a Wonderful Life. Careful, though, as many / most are 2- or 3-disc.

CANADA
Ender's Game

FRANCE
Brothers

GERMANY
Amy Winehouse: Back to Black (gold text on banner)
Bounty Killer According to image in database...
Red Machine (Endangered)
White Lion 3D
White Vengeance This isn't white-white, is it?

Dream of the Last Samurai
Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror (Limited Edition) (Hottarake no shima - Haruka to maho no)
Ponyo (Gake no ue no Ponyo) There are two in the database; any owners want to confirm which has the frosted case?

SWEDEN
Amy Winehouse: Back to Black (gold text on banner)

UK
Black Swan (Triple Play, was HMV exclusive)
Nosferatu
White Dog
White of the Eye

Looks like all of Arrow, BFI's Dual Format ("Flipside") and most Masters of Cinema Blu-rays come in clear cases.

US
Ambassador, The
Black Swan (Target exclusive, clear)
Congress, The (clear)
Miami Connection
Midnight Special (music, 6-disc)
Thief of Bagdad
Velvet Underground: White Light / White Heat (gold text on banner)

Member says several Aniplex US titles have clear cases. Search Blu-rays choosing a US flag in the text box and "Aniplex" under Studio. (Not sure about Japan releases.)

All Drafthouse Films releases come in a clear case.

Many concert Blu-rays and even DVDs come in clear G2 (Blu-ray) cases so remember to check the music section!

PS3 games come in a frosted case, though they're 14mm spines so the art will be a millimeter short at the open edge.

NEW! Twilight Time's new site now sells a 5-pack of clear cases.

Casetopia sells clear PS3 cases.

All Criterion titles come in a clear case, of course, but they use full-height art so you can't really use them to replace another Blu-ray case unless you don't mind a large gap at the top.

Some or all the titles from Cohen Media Group have clear cases. I saw My Afternoons with Margueritte with a clear case in a Fry's (US).

Occasionally a normally frosted case will come in a run where the cases are clear. I remember seeing a Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D this way at Best Buy.

There seem to be several types of frosted replacement cases on Amazon and eBay as well. Many are slimline, though (4-5mm, about half the width of a normal case).

Lastly, here are clear Blu-ray replacement cases in the UK.

That's it. Let me know what I've missed!

Just check out the Wild Side Video distributor page for several more additions to your list. French speakers can take pride in owning them, the rest of us can only gaze admirably.

More and more studios in France are taking a leaf out of Wild Side's book, it seems, and thinking outside the box. May this creativity spread to more regions.

Crows zéro 2 (Black) will be released May 11.
Serge Gainsbourg, vie héroïque (Black) will be released June 1.
Le Mac (Yellow) (the first of its kind?) will be released July 7.

That Bright Star case looks stunning, complimenting the artful poster perfectly, and isn't bound by English-friendliness, so I may just go for it. Need to see if the film is as good as reviews suggest first.

Added. Thanks for the suggestion; it does seem that WSV are leading the pack in terms of different colored amarays. And I might get that French Bright Star provided French subs are not forced for the VOST.

I'm jealous, I have been quiely moaning to buy blu cases in some color other than blu here in the US, but so far nothing as of yet. Maybe now this will help some case manufactures to rethink their position on such a matter. Brokeback Mountain looks awesome in it's case!!!!

Valhalla Rising looks awesome !!!! I do like some changes for certain films. Got to admit I'm pleased with the blu cases.
