Good work.

- It appears Sony's supply chain was configured for 13 million maximum this year - thus, the shortages. Wonder what it would have been if supply met the demand.

- Offical gap is now 4.5 million with the closest competitor - definitely getting within striking distance.

- With the ambitious target, can we expect a $50 price cut?

- PS2 is having some awesome retirement years.

- The actual loss for the 4th quarter is $33 mil. for NP&D division.

Actually, I believe the PS3 sales target is not really ambitious. The last 6 months of the FY, close to 10 million PS3s were sold.

Sony will want profits from there game division. So i'd say it's unlikely that there'l be a pricecut.

I dont think 15million is ambitious at all. 2 million more than last fiscal and with games like Gran Turismo to come.

Remember a year ago this time when people mocked Sony's claim of selling 13 million PS3s in the coming year?

Good times, good times.

Max, do you forsee Sony keeping the PS3 at $299 for the rest of the FY or will there be a pre-Xmas drop?

Hey Max, this is off-topic, but I'm curious: How is Walkman doing these days? I always imagine iPod dominating its "competition" to the point where nothing else is profitable at all. Does Sony have some sort of plan in place for taking on this juggernaut?

Yes, they do. A poor one. I think Walkman as a standalone device is dead, but the Walkman brand in the mobile phone world is alive and in good health. If you include Walkman branded phones in the measure, Sony come out top of the market share charts, if you don't they come third behind Apple and Samsung (on a worldwide basis).

I think Sony Ericsson are part of the plan, and they are slowly improving, but their product execution is still lacking. Take the X10, it is a great piece of hardware which has been gimped by poor execution and poor software delivery. Stuff like a plastic touch screen shouldn't be making it past QC, but at SE it does. The same sort of stuff is happening in the Walkman division as well.

Vaio will get a big turnaround this year as the position themselves against Apple with a few nice products.

I think the worst is behind Sony, looking forward the Game division should be profitable this year, they're betting on 15 million shipped without a price drop I'm sure. A U$199 PS3 would ship more than 15 million this year. PSP at 8 million shipped means no price drop and I can't help but wonder why, they gotta make over U$50 on each machine sold, probably more like U$70, they can afford a price drop on both the PSP3000 and the Go and still be profitable. PS2 will probably sell 6 million at the same price point, won't be surprised if it beats that forecast like it did last year, it sells a lot in developing countries. I also think (hope) that this next FY is a profitable one for the Playstation business, I believe they have lost all the money made from the PS1 and PS2 days.

Kinda worrying that PSN is still not profitable though, I would've thought it was profitable right now for sure. I also think that Sony's vagueness (they said approx same as FY09) in predicting software shipments suggests that the PSP2 is coming.

Remember, when "people" mocked PS3 owners for not buying games. Now, it's been revealed that PS3 sold more software while having 4.5 million less units in the world.

Sadly those mocker will still stand by their statement, and act as though facts and numbers don't exist. Or they'll switch gear and pretend to never mock at all. Such as, "See, I always knew PS3 would be a hit." Right. lol

And yet Sony's Game Division still lost almost $900 million. Something to be proud of?

For the year sure, but you should be looking at the trends rather than the annual figure. For the last two quarters (since the introduction of the slim and discontinuation of the phat) Sony have made almost no losses in the games division while NPS is almost break even.

Last year included a one time write-down on inventory because of the price-cut to phats when the slim was released. They were supposed to be mostly sold out, but they weren't and Sony had to write off around $300m in lost earnings.

Is that for each individual quarter, or cumulatively?
