I thought it would be nice to have a thread that specifies wether a given movie was filmed in 3D or converted to 3D. Of the upcoming movies that I am interested in seeing it goes: (I believe. If you have proof otherwise, please let me know.)
Alice in Wonderland - converted live action, CGI - filmed Alien Prequels - filmed Alpha and Omega - filmed Avatar - filmed Captain America - converted Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader - converted Contagion - ? Drive Angry - filmed Ghost Rider 2 - converted The Green Hornet - converted Green Lantern - converted Guliver's travels - ? Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II - converted Jack Ass 3D - filmed Legend of the Guardians - filmed Megamind - filmed My Soul to Take - Converted Piranha - converted Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - filmed Priest - converted Resident Evil: Afterlife - filmed Rio - filmed Saw 3D - filmed Tangled - filmed Thor - converted Transformers 3 - filmed Tron Legacy - filmed Yogi Bear - filmed Feel free to add to or update the list as you see fit. Thanks. Last edited by MyBlu-rayBrotherEd; 05-03-2011 at 05:11 PM. |

![]() Hadn't realized that Green Lantern has been shot in 3D!.. Excellent! Sucker Punch can be removed however. Snyder is a fan of 3D, but he didn't want to convert Sucker Punch at the last minute, ala Clash Of the Titans. Still, at least it is being released in IMAX! I agree, good idea. This reminds me of the following site that I had come across that was also attempting to put together a "Native 3D" vs "Conversion 3D" list.

Not a bad idea (if one recognizes the giant caveat that certain films "filmed" in 3D will be bad, and others that use "fake" 3D post processing might be fine).
What are you going to do about all-CGI works? I can't imagine that anyone from a CGI film is going to take 2D elements and post-process it (ie., they'll rerender for 3D space), so it's probably moot, but thought I'd throw it out there... ![]() Anyhoo, you've left off "Cave of Forgotten Dreams", filmed in 3D (and promising to be a hell of a doc) |

I had been thinking about posting a thread like this, but I just ended up using this Wikipedia entry as a reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_RealD_films |

For computer animated movies the whole debate on Native 3D shooting versus Conversion is a moot debate. Computer animation is native 3D by nature and exists in 3D in the movies native computer files and for 3D is simply re-rendered from the original digital files. Dreamworks liked to make a big deal about Monsters vs Aliens being the first animated movie originally rendered in 3D initially rather then re-rendered for 3D later but in practice it makes no difference. So distinguishing animated movies as "filmed in 3D" is kind of a pointless excersise.
Live action 3D is different. Since a 2D shot live action movie has no digital files and thus it must add digital shadding on top of the live action footage. Though not much different in principle then any other post-production digital manipulation that 2D movies get all the time now a days it still is creating something that doesn't exist in the original shooting. It adds layers of depth by bringing different objects in the frame and manipulating them forward. Problem is that often times too few layers are added for time and money constraits which gives the movie a "Cardboard cutout" effect where unconverted objects look unnaturally flat next to more well converted objects. 3D cameras have unlimited depth as does the human eye. Thats why shooting with 3D cameras is a much safer but and in general produces superior quality results. Last edited by Jimmy Smith; 08-12-2010 at 06:28 PM. |

Of course, the real benefit of having a sticky thread that's supposed to be a comprehensive list of films shot natively in 3D vs being converted in post-production is not just to give a heads-up to users on whether they should fork over their 3D-surcharge at the box office for upcoming movies, but to provide information on past movies that may be issued as 3D Blu-ray Discs.
For instance, I've heard good things about the 3D-conversion of The Nightmare Before Christmas, but a real stickler might adamantly say that they'll never see a non-native 3D movie in theaters, or purchase the BD, precisely because it was originally shot flat. |

Im glad Synder's Legend of the Guardians is still 3D and I hope Synder natively shoots in 3D his next live action project. |

Still, as you say, "LOTG" looks to be a three dimensional stunner! I cannot wait to see it! |
