Network release is from a screening print and has stuff missing as well as being poor quality. They didn't intentionally cut it, that's just how the print they used is. They tried to provide an uncropped alternative to the other transfer but it didn't quite work out alas.

Australian release is region free, uses the cropped but good quality Optimum and Happinet master but the extras are PAL so you might not be able to play those.

George Romero dropped huge news at Monster Mania yesterday! Apparently he has found a 16mm work print which includes the roughly 9 min. scene never before released on home media. This was a scene that takes place at the jump cut in the basement, including the largest zombie scene in the film! Criterion needs to get on releasing this on Blu!

Well if that was an extra on a potential disc, maybe it would get a legit company to put it out since it would have something the public domain discs don't have access to.

That's great news! This should mean the US will get a legit release sometime in the future.

No idea how the legalities work... would George be able to copyright this version?

Now, that would be an amazing way for him to stamp his copyright onto the film finally. My fingers are so tightly crossed we get to see this.

This thread is 5 years old and for 5 years people have convinced themselves that an official U.S. release should be coming?

You have to admire people who can hold out for that long.

Some people can and won't import. That's their prerogative. You can't harp on that. I will import if it is a desired title, or the USA is price-gouging like the Universal's Monster Set. Some people just don't want to import even if it is the same region code. Simple as that.

I still haven't bought any of the blu ray versions worldwide I'm still holding off for a release that will be definitive. I did the same thing with Hellraiser I didn't buy any single blu ray release I held off and look know Arrow released a box set of the first three.

He also said that the film was being restored (supervised by Martin Scorsese) from the original negatives. That is when they found the 16mm workprint. I doubt they would go through all of that work only for a limited arthouse run.

Stop getting my hopes up! I haven't imported simply because I want a true remaster. A disk that has real love poured into it. Remaster, bonus features, etc.

As well as a new cut, I'd also like to see the 16mm workprint in full as an extra someday. It could have little differences in editing throughout.

The film's a genre giant. Any new way to view it that isn't the 1998 edition is good by me.

Yeah I've held off for the longest time, was about to crack on importing the Happinet disc soon. But damn now I might have to wait even longer to own this classic on Blu-ray! It's worth it though, to get it the treatment it's long deserved.

This year I've replaced a lot of movies that I owned only on VHS before (never felt the need to replace them on DVD due to poor discs). I still have the NOTLD VHS put out by Anchor Bay back in 1996, so I'll probably end up watching that this Halloween. I never bought the imports because I don't have a region free player, and if I did, they don't look that good. Glad to hear that there may just be a real release here in region A.

I'll happily get a hold of an official US blu-ray and have it sit alongside my Happinet blu-ray, which is still a pretty great blu-ray in spite of some minute issues.

I'm personally happy with the PQ of the happinet releasese, but if Martin Scorsese himself is involved with the transfer from the original negatives, I'd gladly purchase this again.

I've had the Japanese release for years that I'm happy with, but the prospects of a US release restored from the negative (along with extra footage from the workprint) has me excited.
