Australia Complete List of Cropped & Open Matte Australian Releases

Full Credit belongs to Deado for originally creating and maintaining the thread for as long as he did!
Switched over to Davidian's possession as of 11/20/16

Since so many Australian releases are cropped, it's about time a list was made so people are aware of which releases to avoid. All the below titles have an original aspect ratio (OAR) of 2.39:1 (except where stated otherwise), as per IMDB technical specs, however have been cropped to 1.78:1 for Australian home video release on Blu-ray. This means they can have missing picture info on the left or right of the picture, or both. Also included are titles that are open matte - ie. more picture than the original ratio - they are marked as so.

There are some cases here where the OAR is not 2.35:1, but another ratio like 1.33:1, but has been cropped on the top and bottom instead. If you have a suggestion for an addition that is for a movie that is not 2.35:1, I can add it but only if there is a significant amount of picture lost - not just a few percent like what happens when a 1.85:1 film is cropped slightly to fit to 1.78:1 like what happens on a lot of Warner Brothers and Paramount Blu-rays where they don't release it in 1.85:1 OAR.

Cropped Releases

Open Matte or Reframing

If anyone has any more to add to this list please share!

Update: Added info about where to find OAR releases, with US taking preference and other countries only listed if the title in question isn't available in the US

Nice work mate. Fortunately, for me the only title I'm interested in is Buried. I can wait till it hits the bargain bin though.

As good as the US may be regarding OAR, of the currently listed Astro Boy, Buried, From Paris with Love, The Hitcher and Stone are unfortunately confirmed region locked (checked unconfirmed titles on Axelmusic). Some might want to take that into account.

Very true, it's yet another reason why having region free capability these days is invaluable.

Also the reason why I have chosen to link to US releases first is because it's US releases that get reviewed here the most (by far), which have the screenshots showing the framing. As for the UK releases it's mainly a guessing game unless there are screenies on the net or someone has the disc.

This will be a very useful thread since it is so difficult to find comparative reviews of Australian discs.

I think the collector is cropped. Back says full frame yet American and uk version are 2.35.1. Can anyone with a copy confirm?

Thanks for the info I had suspected that title might have been culprit, I have it on order from JB Hifi Online, will confirm when I receive it, unless someone else can confirm beforehand.

Another title that may be dodgy... will order this one too to confirm:

Quote:
The Australian film Road Train has just been released on BD.

The back of the BD says 1:78, the IMDb says original is 2:35.

If the back of the BD right, then this is either cropped or open-matte.
released by Pinnacle films which is a bad start too.

Andy has 'The Collector' now I think, hopefully he can confirm the status when he watches it

*Edit

- I'm wondering if its worth including 'The Evil Dead' in this list? Its the other way round, the local BD only contains the 16x9 version, and not the OAR of 4:3 ... ?

Yep since it's a unique case I've added it

I was also thinking of adding Night of the Living Dead AU release which is actually a 4:3 presentation but there is less picture info than one of the UK releases (which is also 4:3, but more picture).... but not really worth adding as that release which isn't cropped has worse PQ so it's not really a 'better' release.

Interesting to hear the AU version of The Evil Dead only has the 16x9 version - lucky I bought the US version which has both aspect ratios to choose from

The au version is exactly the same as the optimum uk blu (special features are different) all the versions of notld except the us forgotten films version are cropped.

Ok good to know, that release is by Icon though, the AU version is by Roadshow.... don't know if they are the same transfer.
