It's almost got to be chroma noise, generated from the hardware the film was scanned on. LVR (MB's film lab in Rome) is still using a CRT Telecine, which naturally produces more noise than a newer CCD film scanner. It also needs to be tinkered with and have parts replaced on a semi-regular basis. If you let that hardware go to pot it'll just produce blurry noisy crap, regardless of what the source print looks like.
(This could also explain why all of Blue Underground's Italian horror transfers are super "grainy", too, but I don't think they've ever said who made their transfers...) It's a real shame. I really dig this movie and I'd love to see those outtakes. But I've given Media Blasters more than enough of my money for crumby releases. If they can deliver a decent transfer on Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals I'll happily pick that up, but Burial Grounds doesn't look worth the $12 they're charging for it. |

Definitely looks better than the DVD. The colors are brighter and the sharpness is a lot better. Fine detail is also about a half step above the DVD version. That being said this edition leaves a lot to be desired. The noise level is off the charts. At times the picture looks like millions of tiny insects all over the screen. The sound is not great and even a couple of parts of the dub don't synch up correctly(check out when they are boarding up the windows). I don't remember whether the DVD version was like that or not(probably an original print error). If you already have the DVD, I would only recommend this at about the $12 price range.
Media Blasters really dropped the ball but I guess a release is better than none at all. The outtakes don't have dialogue track but are fairly interesting and the two interviews are in Italian with subtitles. Last edited by john01824; 08-12-2011 at 11:21 PM. |

Just watch this last night. Not the best looking blu, but this is about the best this thrash classic is ever going to look, unless someone else steps up and does better. I found the blu to be watchable and is better then the DVD I have and miles better then the old VHS I rented many times in the 80's.

I don't hate them. But most hate them because they put out crappy product most of the time. If MB would spent the money and take the time with there blu-ray releases and do them right, then maybe every one would not be hating.

consistently disappointing track record. constant delays with the end result almost never being worth the wait. its a shame because they have some great films in their catalog. i would say i 'hate' them, but ive been burned enough times that ive learned to be cautious with their releases.

You must not own many Media Blasters DVDs...
![]() About the last Shriek Show DVD I can remember buying was The Man From Deep River: For one thing it has two sets of subtitles - one for the Italian dub, one for the English dub - but both subtitle tracks are identical. If you watch the English version you have subtitles for the scenes that are already in English, and the translation of the Italian dialog is completely different anyway. It also screws up the color grading of all the day-for-night shots, so you see characters going to sleep in the middle of the day (even turning off a lamp!). It's just an incredibly sloppy release, and sadly, that's about normal for the Shriek Show DVD catalog. When they switched to Blu-ray, I figured the bar would have to raise along with the format... and then Beyond the Darkness is missing footage, the audio is pitched wrong and goes out of sync, and the film's in the wrong aspect ratio too. Same trash, different format. Their subsequent releases have arguably been even worse, too! For everything wrong with BTD, at least it was a fairly decent looking film transfer, which we can't say that for Zombie Holocaust or Burial Grounds. If there needed to be a final nail in MB's coffin for me personally, Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend is is. They used an actual release print, didn't even try to clean it up, and when the print was damaged they swapped it out for VHS quality footage totaling about 8 minutes. The whole thing is cropped into widescreen despite the "movie" being compromised of footage made for home video, too. MB is either incompetent, or just doesn't give a f***. I can't decide which is worse, but I know I'll be avoiding their releases UNLESS it's from a finished digital master. Queen's Blade is a knock-out of a release, and I'm sure 12 Kingdoms will be, too. It's when they have to make their own transfers that things start to go down hill... |

And, just to be fair to Shriek Show, their new release of DEVIL DOG looks pretty much perfect - a couple primitive video generated special effects aside, of course!
Keep in mind this was a TV movie from 1978 - if we can all stop talking about how Zombie Holocaust and the like are "just how cheap films look", I think it'd be beneficial... If MB can make this thing look that good, there are no excuses left. And hey, if this is a sign of things to come, I'm fine with that. Keep it up, MB! ![]() |

I remain schizoid about the whole MB deal. I love their eurotrash catalog, and applaud them for releasing movies with such limited appeal...it must be difficult for them to even conceive of turning a profit. On the other hand, yes, they are annoying as hell with their mystical "release dates", and their more than adequately demonstrated contempt for both the consumer and the material. However, it looks like I'm a goner, and will be supporting their further efforts nonetheless. Now, if Image would just release "Reincarnation of Isabel" and "Nude for Satan" on blu...

I watched my copy the other night, and it ABSOLUTELY looks better than the dvd. At the same time...it still looks like shit. It's tough to support Shriek Show when their blu rays thus far have been sooo lacking, but the chance of somebody else putting out a better release is pretty slim. So in my opinion, if you are a huge fan of the film and a marginal upgrade in PQ is important to you, then go ahead and pick it up. I was kinda-sorta satisfied....

It's almost 2 minutes shorter than the DVD, despite having a bunch of never-before-seen footage? That's... unexpected, to say the least.
