Default Dimension Films

I was just thinking why Sin City is not out yet. It was made by Dimension Films. Which was owned by Miramax, which in turn was owned by Buena Vista. However, now Dimension is owned by the Wienstein Company (which used to be Miramax) which is a HD DVD company. Could this be the reason why some old Buena Vista owned Miramax movies (Equilibrium, Scream, The Crow, ect.) are being delayed to Blu-ray?

I tried a forum search for this topic and I couldn't find anything. So, before anybody pitches a holy fit, help me out and point me into the right direction.

I remember seeing a chart of the studios....can't remember where, but try to do a search for the chart by thread or post.

I seem to recall seeing something that said Disney retains everything prior to Oct. 2005 and Dimension has everything afterward, but don't quote me on that.

Sin City will come out at the same time as Sin City 2 following standard studio procedure

All the movies prior to 2005 still belong to Buena Vista. Everything beyond 2005 is Weinstein's. This may or may not include Sin City which came out in 2005. I don't know if there is a particular month in 2005 which is used as the cut-off to Buena Vista's property.

Either way, I think Weinstein is going to start releasing movies on Blu-ray early next year.

That doesn't make any sense. Sin City and Sin City2 are made by different studios.

Also, the filming of Sin City 2 hasn't even started yet. An early summer 09 release seems likely, I am hopeful that Buena Vista doesn't wait until 09 to release Sin City on Blu.

Sin City would be a Disney title but if the movie was re-edited like Kill Bill has been for "The Whole Bloody Affair" then The Weinstein Company would the studio. Most likely Disney will announce Kill Bill & Sin City for the same date, whenever that is. Both were supposed to be 2007 titles, but Disney has alot of titles that still haven't seen the light of day that were announced early in the year. It seems like they are taking a wait and see approach just like Warner with this Christmas season before pouring boatloads of support into Blu-Ray.

No, it wouldn't

Kill Bill:WBA was planned as a theatrical release from the beginning, that they would do a limited unrated release of the way QT wanted it a year or so later, so it was an official theatrical project at the time of the split

WickyWoo do you know if Highlander will be coming to Blu-ray. Seems like it was a Dimension film and last I remember was released as a Republic picture. Any info on that?

Highlander 1 and 2, animated film and TV series- Owned by Anchor Bay/Starz
Highlander 3 and 4- Dimension (Disney owns)
Highlander 5- Lionsgate

Highlander would require massive work before an HD release is even feasible. It really needs a run through the Lowry ringer.

Not necessarily. I believe that Finding Neverland had a Sin City clip in the begining. How long has the movie been out on Blu?

I don't think that's an accurate assessment of Disney's BR plans. They have been making a big deal about BR in most of their print ads. They also recently launched their BR demo tour where they have an elaborate presentation showing off what BR can do. I'd say they're almost pushing BR more than Sony from what I've seen recently.

They are pushing it, for the past 3 months they were giving retailers $5 for every Disney Blu-Ray title they sold with the exception of a few of their titles, but that doesn't take away from the fact that they haven't released titles they said were going to be out by now. There's a reason most Blu-Ray studios are only focusing on new releases and that's because catalog titles just aren't selling that great on Blu-Ray for any studio. The only titles selling very well are new releases. I'm in the retail industry and I can say for a fact that when it comes to Blu-Ray catalog is not a big seller, HD-DVD on the other hand sells alot of just about anything that has a good transfer. The studios know this and that's what they are paying attention to, they don't just care about new releases, they really care about the catalog titles that are already profitable for them and that they can make alot of money by selling over in a new format as well. If catalog doesn't sell well the studios aren't particularly happy. It's all about money to them and their catalog titles are where the most money can be made.

And as far as Sin City and The Weinstein Company, The Weinstein Company owns the rights to any new Sin City projects, if they have a re-edited version of the movie they could release under their Dimension films banner on HD-DVD, just like they plan on doing with Kill Bill.
