The documentary is in english but the french subtitles are locked on it.
Thanks Jerome.

Using google translate, looks like picture quality is uneven. Someone said it says the subtitles are forced but I can't find that in the review using translate.
i will quote the review :
"Particularités : Blu-ray Zone B, sous titres français non imposés."

means Zone B and unforced french subtitles.

So, I put my Oppo player on the region A mode (with the remote) and put the Criterion Blow Out disc to be sure I am on the region A Mode. Then I put the 13th Warrior in the player and the disc worked perfectly. After that, I put the John Rambo Blu-Ray from Metropolitan (known to be a region B) and the disc refused to play.

So, the 13th Warrior Blu-Ray is a region free disc.
But of course, I have a check disc, so maybe there is a possibility that the discs released in November may be different.

Jerome, did Metropolitan alone produce the documentary or it is possible they co-produced it with Americans and it could show up on a potential US/UK release?

it's only produced by metropolitan. I don't think Buena Vista will be interested to do a special edition of the film in the US. There is a cult around the film here in France, but I don't think it is the same in the US.

I just received this, and checked it out. It is definitely locked to "B." The menu for language lists French and "Version originale 5.1 DTS HD Master Audio sous-titree" This option plays an English track with no subtitles. The subtitle button indicates 3 French options and "Off," which happens when you select "Version Originale."

To Metropolitan..."Merci."

What about burnt-in English subs, for the foreign dialogue at the beginning?

No English subs anywhere, but there are none on my Touchstone DVD either.

Maybe my memory's playing tricks on me. I was nearly sure that there were unremovable subtitles on the DVD for various lines of dialogue, up until Banderas learns the Viking's language and can suddenly understand what they're saying.

At the very beginning Omar Sharif translates,,, "You can't talk to the king because he's dead." I checked my DVD - briefly - and didn't see subtitles where the journey has begun and they're joking, presumably, sitting around the fire. The spoken language morphs into English as he, and we, learn the language.

I don't think anything's missing, but if somebody gives me a time point I can check.

You're 100% right, Omar Sharif handles all the translating. I pulled my PAL DVD out, to have a look. Can't think why I thought otherwise, but anyway, thanks for taking the time to confirm the subs are removable.

Ordered and shipped.

Didn't use Amazon.fr, though. It worked at nearly £30 shipped to the UK.
Went with plusdedvd.com, £23 delivered. Still pricey, but whatcha gonna do?

Oh man do I want this movie. It was filmed near my hometown on Vancouver Island. And I'm a big Michael Crichton fan.

Don't bother, it's not worth the price of importing. The disc, that is.
