I'll wait for reviews, but if they're positive, I'll likely order it along with Haunted Palace and Boogeyman from D & T. Not to get too far off topic, but are there any other horror titles with quality transfers available only in Germany? I already know about Warlock and the Last Man on Earth upconvert.

I've ordered a bunch from Grooves Inc. The House on Haunted Hill remake, Shallow Ground, Dance of the Dead, The Mothman Prophecies, Cry Wolf, and Poltergeist 3 all look good. The Abandoned looks great. I have four more coming (Lake Mungo, The Reeds, The Legend of Hell House, and The Haunted Palace), I'll check on them when I get them. The Boogeyman looks excellent. I know the broadcast hd versions of The Haunted Palace and The Premature Burial (shown on MGM HD and Epix HD) look excellent for broadcast hd.

The swedish BD already looked magnificent so that doesn't surprise me
![]() I love your reviews, with detailed specifications posts and all so I'm looking forward to read your views on all those BDs ![]() EDIT : I already can tell you Shallow Ground is a bad MPEG 2 transfer/upscale 'though. And Legend of Hell House is a nice transfer. Last edited by Torrente; 07-31-2012 at 08:53 AM. |

Thanks. I try to provide as much technical information as I can, and answer any questions, which is easier on the video side (since there are so many variations in audio quality dependent upon equipment). People usually already know whether they like the film or not, and extras are usually secondary to a/v quality. The only problems I've ever had are with registry errors hurting my ability to decipher the correct video quality (as I use a PC), and the fact that I often don't watch the entire film through and through when I provide the info, so I may be missing problems; but I don't fully review a disk, only provide info to help.
I've seen Shallow Ground in broadcast hd and it looked similar (which could just mean the master is upscaled throughout all media), and it does look better than the upscaled dvd, but you may be right. I haven't looked at it since buying it though, and I was having video card problems then. I remember the colors looking a bit muted. I'll probably compare it to the dvd today. I know I have to check to see if the Australian Transformers: The Movie disk and UK Akira disk are region locked, because I was asked about both. |

I just checked and there seems to be four different Shallow ground blu-rays by four different companies. I have the steelbook by Best Entertainment. Looking at my blu-ray again it seems hd to me, nice three dimensional depth and contrast, lots of visible grain (similar to grainier blu-rays like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie and Taxi Driver), and the detail looked hd to me. I looked at it back to back with TMNT: The Movie, so a big difference would have been really noticeable. Keep in mind this is through my lcd and not my superior crt's.

BEWARE!
According to expert and industry insider Torsten Kaiser this Blu-ray is an Upscale from a PAL-master. |

Received it in the mail today.
Both the English and German audio are DTS HD-MA. Here are some screencaps. Judge for yourself. As always these uploaded caps are only about 60-70% of the quality of the originals and the film looks different in motion. Honestly the print looked in rougher shape than The Haunted Palace's, but it's also filled with fog so it's tough to find areas that look crisp in the fog (which also makes grain and flaws more visible). It's also in 25 fps PAL format. I looked at some other blu-rays I received recently and they didn't look all that great either, but they were still obviously in hd. Like I said, judge the quality for yourself, but I'm going to try and find my broadcast hd capture and get screens from that to compare. [Show spoiler]

![]() Judging by those screencaps... I don't find them as ugly as what I read about this transfer before. But maybe a comparison to the HD broadcast will help to make our mind even better. |

It said 25 fps in MediaInfo lite, I'll see what BD Info says. Maybe it's 1080i 50, and uses some HD-DVD type internal pulldown trickery to line double to 25 fps. I'll check again. I'm going to go through my stacks of broadcast hd captures to try and find the version shown on MGM HD or Epix HD within the next hour, but I won't have captures until 9-10 p.m. (I'm on Eastern Standard Time, so it's a little after 4:30 p.m. now), I have some work to do before then, so I'm just on the internet for a short bit.
