Japan Drive (2011) 9/19/2012 - with exclusive Director's Commentary

Amazon Japan preorder

As usual, Japan gets the movie on Blu-ray and DVD extremely late, and extremely expensive, but this time, "Drive" comes with an exclusive audio commentary by director Nicolas Winding Refn, an exclusive interview with Refn, and a 15 minute making-of.

Awesome! Thanks for the heads-up. Wonder why they get the commentary? If they are truely the only ones getting it, I'll be shelling out the $$$.

Nicolas Winding Refn stated that he would like to do a special edition for Drive in the near feature. I guess he has already completed some of the special features, i.e. audio commentary.

The director commentary is about 10 lines of dialogue just like the Gosling character.

That doesn't sound right... Refn was chatty and informative as hell in the Valhalla Rising commentary which has like literally 100 lines or less of dialogue.

I think 'toddly6666' was being sarcastic.

Indeed Refn is usually very articulate, and I'm looking forward to hearing his commentary on ONLY GOD FORGIVES.

Derp. My bad. I'm not the best at picking up on sarcasm outside of face to face talking. And even then.... Lol

I'm also looking forward to hearing his commentary for Only God Forgives, after I watch the movie of course.

As usual with JP releases, I am waiting to see if anyone thinks this has any better PQ than the US BD.

Has anyone watched this yet? As one might imagine I, too, am curious about the commentary.

I received this a few weeks ago but opted not to post anything until I'd had a chance to sit down with it. Since the commentary is the main point of interest with this release, I'll address that first: There isn't much to say other than that this solo Refn commentary track is both very real and very excellent, offering up as many production facts and anecdotes as a fan could hope for. Further, the guy gabs the WHOLE time, with literally no lulls or dead spots. That having been said, Refn ironically mentions at no less than about 5-6 points that he will have more info to impart about key aspects of the production in "the near future" - presumably referencing additional supplemental material for a planned forthcoming special edition (possibly the rumored Criterion edition)? Still, it's hard to imagine there's significantly more to reveal than the feast of info served up here. Rounding out the extras are a 14 minute EPK-style featurette consisting of brief interview clips with Refn and main cast interspersed with movie footage, a 15 minute Refn interview (the latter a little more substantial than the former), and two (dubbed) JP theatrical trailers.

A/V: Though I'm not equipped for screen grabs and I didn't do *extensive* A/B comparisons, I'll cautiously say this AVC encode appears roughly on par with that on the superb U.S. Sony release in casual viewing, presented in correct aspect ratio and sharing, best I could tell, all of its basic characteristics. Additionally, I noticed no glaring issues in any key areas - artifacts/banding/cropping/filtering/EE/contrast/crush. Likewise, the English DTS MA 5.1 track seems to mirror that on the US disc, no complaints. An English 2.0 PCM track is also included, along with JP subs (only) for both the feature and commentary. The main menu, I was surprised to find, is presented in English. In lieu of a traditional pop-up menu with full feature selection, we get a vertically oriented chapter menu in an appropriately neon pink column at screen left. I didn't have a chance to confirm region status.

In short, I would say the commentary alone warrants serious consideration for fans, with the excellent a/v the icing on the cake. Doubly so if one can find it on sale or has some cdjapan points to cash in.
