. Shame, Aladdin is one of the best looking movies
I have no idea what you are looking at

I see no edge enhancement artifacts, the things on Iago's eyes are pencil lines and there is no banding on Jafar's jewel.

Thank the gods. Here I was already fearing Aladdin's video transfer would be half-assed (and done well only for the American release)

Yeah, I don't know what that is. I'll give you this one but overall the image doesn't look like it has been sharpened . I don't know what to tell you.

Just another example, to show you it's not just in the eyes; it's around every character line:

I see what you mean. Yeah, it looks like edge enhancement but wouldn't it show a lot more if it did have it? Even if it is though, in motion you can't tell. Sure if you zoom in by 500% on an image you will spot something but zoomed out I can't make out any artefact unless I know exactly where it is and I fixate on that.

I'd give it a 4,5/5. How about you?

It's good to know you didn't notice it in motion. But I really don't need to zoom in on it at all too see it and I see it in all your shots: you see, I only zoom in AFTER I spot something is wrong.

So, combining the high sharpness, the bad aspect ratio, the weird side lines and the edge "enhancements", I really can't go over 3,5/5 and that's already me being nice.
I really don't believe this will be unaltered when they release it in the US, so I will wait until then.

Other things that should be noted on this release is the blue castle logo is replaced by the current one. I was surprised to see that since several releases hadn't had their castle opening modified/"updated". Lion King was the last one to have this done.

But on a good note, Aladdin's line after "down kitty..." "take off!" is back in. I believe that was removed on the Platinum Edition. I could be wrong about that, but I finally heard it on this version.

I doubt it's edge enhancement. It looks more like overshoot artefacts (which look similar) from whatever scaling algorithm was used to get it down to 1920x1080.

So at the end of the day is this a yes pick up or not? I checked the screen caps, can see the difference but didn't WOW me. But is it worth the upgrade from DVD?

Peter Pan really needs a new restoration for this new Bluray

------2003 DVD ----------- 2007 DVD -------- Blu-ray (EU) ------- Blu-ray (US)

Though by no means an animation expert, and while I certainly don't have the technical capacity to either champion or discredit the noticeable differences between some of these DVD and Blu-ray transfers, I'd just like to briefly chime in here...

After having spent the last hour reading over this thread and viewing the screenshot comparisons of these animated Disney classics, I must admit I'm puzzled by some of the drastic variation I'm seeing. For the record, I must state that the only Blu-ray transfer of a Disney animated film I have seen is "Peter Pan," and I thought it looked excellent. At the same time, I've never seen "Peter Pan" on DVD, nor any other Disney animated film for that matter (other than the "Toy Story" films). But based on what I'm seeing in all these cap comparisons, I will admit that I'm kind of on the fence here. Clearly, a lot of the more recent transfers look soft, plain and simple...and to me, they look much less like projected film than some of the earlier DVD releases, which are noticeably sharper. At the same time, in a lot of the shots, I'd be lying if I said I thought the colors look better on the DVD, because they don't...needless to say, this doesn't excuse some of the instances on the newer transfers, where despite stronger and/or corrected colors, it looks like detail has been completely wiped away by digital restoration efforts...

In my opinion, I don't think any of the current releases (at least of what has been shown in the caps...like "Cinderella," "Snow White," "Peter Pan") are ideal, but such is the case for about 99.9% of all films available on home-video . Clearly, it's going to come down to a matter of personal taste and preference. I can see, and sympathize with, arguments from both sides of the equation.

As I seem to find myself saying all too often nowadays on the forum threads...stick with whatever version makes you happiest . This is, after all, home-video...something that we're all enjoying in the private comfort of our own living quarters. No one needs to be impressed except yourself. And if you have a problem with a particular transfer, and feel a previous version is superior, then by all means stay with what you're going to enjoy. Regardless of all of the back and forth discussion and arguing that takes place on these threads, at the end of the day, when you sit down to watch your favorite movies at home, the only one who needs to be pleased with what you're viewing is...you .

As are we... But anyway, welcome and good to know some do take the time to go through all this!

And why does one buy a Blu-ray if one already has the DVD!?... Because it ought to be the sharper one... by far!

But what I actually came here for this time, is to show you all the clearly buggy encoder that is being used by Disney at the moment...
First there was Home on the Range that, first of all looked weird... but it also had something we called Edge Enhancement. The same "Edge Enhancement" was seen throughout Aladdin. After digging into it a bit further, I now know it isn't Edge Enhancement what we were seeing, those are Ringing Artifacts.
And the problem is, they are still using that buggy encoder, as the latest releases of Atlantis: The Lost Empire and The Emperor's New Groove show the same problem, throughout the entire movies.

To show you this, I made a selection of four shots of these movies, and enlarged it just x2, to make it look on your computer monitor a bit like it would look on your tv:

Disney, please fix these software problems on your systems, as your Classics really do deserve the best!

Hi Lnds500,

funny how we both get back here practically at the same time!...
Thanks a lot again for this great comparison you made! That must have taken you quite some time. Probably more than it took Disney to make this "restoration"...

I think it was yumny who made the comparison with Aristocats a few days back, wasn't it?... Well... you nailed it! This really is Aristocats the second. I truly hate what "they" have done to it, once again!

Disney!? What the .... are you doing to your legacy!?... How can it be that a 13 year old DVD shows more detail than a modern Blu-ray?... You must know that something has gone wrong then, don't you?
You can see these problems in all the shots Lnds500 made, but especially the shot where Marian looks at the wanted poster of Robin is shocking: practically all the structure in the wood, that is clearly visible in the 2000 DVD, is gone now. And what happened to the subtle pinkish color around her head, that now is the same kind of white as her eyes!?...
On top of all this, I haven't even started to talk about the aspect ratio. So I won't start with that now... But if you look at the first shot Lnds500 made, you can clearly see the artist's intended composition: by letting the tree trunk vanish in the lower left corner, a great sense of depth is created; a sense of depth that is largely diminished now. It looks flat.

So to sum things up: Disney has done a great job making a true classical masterpiece look like a cheap Saturday afternoon cartoon... again!
As some of you might notice by my choice of words... it's starting to annoy me.

I recommend checking out the iTunes/Blu-ray screenshots. While the iTunes version uses the same master as the DVD and they are nearly identical, it lacks the compression artifacts of the DVD (1080) entry

18) Oliver and Company (1988)

- The film has been framed a little differently, cropping a bit from the top and bottom and another two tiny bits from the sides
- The PQ is leaps and bounds better than the DVD
- Aside from some colour anomalies[SUP]*[/SUP], I didn't notice any significant problem

Thanks again Lnds500 for all your work!

About these releases, starting with "The Great Mouse Detective":

based on the horror stories I heard around here about this release, my first response was: "It's not so bad, now is it!?..." Well... yes it is!
It's clean. So far the positives.
It seems like all the lines have been redrawn with a pencil twice as thick!?... Especially in that shot with all the bubbles floating around, one can easily see that those bubble lines are doubled! Looking very bad indeed.
And the choice of AR!?... Let's not talk about that, because it really makes me sick seeing all that artistry disappeared!...
Enough about that. Not wasting any more time or money on this release...

The other one, "Oliver and Company"; now that is a restoration! It's perfectly sharp as well as perfectly clean; proof that both can be accomplished at the same time!
The only negative is the strange choice of AR: this movie was officially made for ratio's between 1.75-1.85. So why in the world put two small black bars at the top and bottom to make it 1.85, where they could have made it full screen 1.78 by filling those bars. Would they have done that, it would have been a perfect release.
Now it's (just) a very good one.

Last edited by Freddy2; 09-28-2013 at 03:30 PM. Reason: Thanks to landofwhimsy.com we now know there is something wrong with Oliver...
