This is good news, as hopefully it will further propel the US release.

I'm really hoping there won't be forced subs on this as I've still got the old non-anamorphic US DVD. One of my favourite soundtracks and a great one-sheet

Gonna need to know what the special features for THIEF are if any before buying, it's on Netflix streaming at the moment.

Thief on blu?!! Dream come true! I cannot wait.
I really hope this release will be region free and, of course, presented without forced subs.

My Oppo, and I'm pretty sure other players, can reposition the subtitles, so that they can be placed below the frame, if necessary. That said, non-forced subtitles are most preferred.

Should point out that on my OppoBDP93 the subs can only be lowered below the black bar in scope ratio films. On films that go to the bottom of the screen I can't lower the subs out of view.
Anyway, apart from whether there are forced subs, would love to hear how this compares to Criterion's. As great as Criterion BDs are technically, there are a number of instances were I prefer the look of the French releases. Heavens Gate would be the most recent example.

I think it will be interesting to compare to the US Criterion for 2 reasons:

(1) is this the theatrical cut, and
(2) will this have different (more natural) color timing?

The color scheme of the new transfer is very natural. Perhaps you expect something else, but there is nothing to be disappointed with here.

Are you speaking of the French release? Because if this is in regards to the Criterion release, let's please keep that argument in the Criterion THIEF blu-ray thread.

Regardless, I will be looking forward to a caps-a-holic screen cap comparison between the 2 releases.

I am speaking of the Criterion release because your post implies that there is a need for more 'natural' transfer - when in reality there isn't. So, there really isn't any argument.

Also, I think that you might be confused a bit. Currently, there is no French release to compare the U.S. release with.

Jesus Christ, Pro. If there is no argument, then why are you arguing? Regardless, let's please keep that argument in the Criterion THIEF blu-ray thread.

That is why I posted:

"Regardless, I will be looking forward to (ie future tense) a caps-a-holic screen cap comparison between the 2 releases."

By the image on the OP's post, Wild Side appears to be releasing their version of THIEF on blu in the near future. I could be wrong, as they also mention DVDs, but it does appear Wild Side will be releasing their version of THIEF in the near future.

The image has been available for almost a year now and there has been no additional information that such a release is upcoming.

And I am not arguing with you. If I was, I would have started pointing out to you why the supervised by Michael Mann transfer should be considered "natural". I responded to your comment because your original post implies that there could be a "more natural" transfer, which strikes me as a very strange speculation considering the fact that you are yet to see Criterion's release (it won't be out on the market for another 2 weeks) and have concluded that there is something that needs to look more natural.

In any event, if a French release materializes then we will see if can have a review on the site to compare the transfers.
