I think Fox Searchlight snached this up in a bidding war from Sundance for close to $10 million. I think that is a Sundance record.

If they see that much potential here this could be something special.

Looks really annoying to me, what family talks like this, or just any people in general?

Consider me out, regardless of how much they paid for it!

After watching the trailer, the tone is nothing like I thought it was going to be. The parents are just awful... like really awful people. I completely agree with you. I'll see what the reviews say, but this has quickly dropped from my most anticipated, sadly. Just hard to watch.

Here are some Sundance reviews:

Doesn't really seem like a Little Miss Sunshine or a 500 Days of Summer.

Shouldn't this be the sequel to Peter Weir's The Way Back?

Looks boring. A shame as it has a few great cast members.

My review (no spoilers):

Quote:
The Way, Way Back (2013)
dir. Nat Faxon, Jim Rash
The Good: Breakthrough performance from Liam James (that kid from The Killing) as the world's most awkward teenager. Water Wizz and its employees, played by Maya Rudolph, co-writer/directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, and the scene-stealing (and always awesome) Sam Rockwell. Honorable mentions to Allison Janney and her lazy-eyed son. Very charming with some solid laughs (but nothing laugh out loud).

The Bad: Steve Carell as the world's biggest a-hole (okay, this really counts as a positive, but man, did I want to punch his face so badly). Uneven pacing. Formulaic. Lots of missed opportunities and underdeveloped subplots. Rob Corddry is useless and Amanda Peet is nothing but a banal plot device. Great chemistry between James and AnnaSophia Robb; Too bad it isn't fleshed out.

The Bottom Line: I can't remember the last movie that had such endearing characters you just wish you could hang out with. You'll want to work at Water Wizz. You'll want to mess around with Rockwell and Co.. So, the plot has been done to death and yeah, the characters are all too familiar. But despite playing it safe, The Way, Way Back manages to be emotionally resonant and crowd-pleasing enough, and in the end, that's what matters most.

Supposed to be a homage to 80's coming of age movies...I can kind of see that in the trailer. I'll give it a chance.

I don't know...I sort of have mixed feelings abou this. The humor kinda falls a bit flat and the story seems a bit too predictable for me though I apart from this it looks like it may at least be decent. Not much of a Steve Carell fan though I can tolerate him in some things such as the 40 Year Old Virgin and Date Night with Tina Fay.

I saw this one at Sundance (along with jOBS and Don Jon's Addiction), and I really liked it a lot. Sure, it is pretty formulaic, and predictable, but it's still a lot of fun with great acting.

If you are not a fan of Steve Carrell, don't worry, he is in it, and he is sort of one the main supporting cast, but he isn't around as much as you would think. The movie is really about the relationship between the young kid and Sam Rockwell's character.

Now, Don Jon was absolutely the best movie we saw at Sundance.
