I'm in for Grey Gardens and Macbeth. Maybe Speedy. I'd like to see the packages first though. I wonder if they'll keep the US numbering system. Very curious.

Very nice to see the UK receive some Criterion love in the same way the US is receiving some Arrow love.

Congrats!

I will only buy if they are physically identical to the US Criterions.

Excellent! Glad to hear my suspicions confirmed, though it may change the playing field. I expect Criterion will be moving forward with Sony titles at first (considering their distribution agreement) but it will be interesting to see what happens with their titles from other studios. And obviously anything that clashes with current UK labels - namely MoC, Arrow and BFI.

Psyched to get some of these, but now I know it'll be more than just this initial handful I may not buy them all at once. I wonder what the prices will be like...I hope they're more like the MoC/Arrow/BFI prices rather than the higher StudioCanal ones.

Oh, and it's not listed yet but one of the titles they submitted to the BBFC was Antonioni's L'Avventura. Both that and Macbeth are obviously the biggest news so far for collectors!

Those are the kinds of films I've been itching for MoC and Arrow to release. Let's hope this new deal means we see some Paramount stuff, but that may depend on Universal (as they handle Paramount's distribution at the moment).

Somebody at Eureka mentioned that a 'big library' of titles that included Grey Gardens was bought up by somebody. I assume that was Criterion then, or Criterion with Sony's collaboration. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of this deal!

Apparently this news was supposed to break Monday, but it leaked thanks to the digital edition of Sight & Sound going live a couple of days early. I suspect there will be official word from Criterion on Monday.

Really, more Paramount films? Surely the exciting aspect of this is that Criterion will release Warners and Sony titles here.

Assuming they can negotiate the rights, that is. Currently, Eureka are the only label who have managed to crack that nut.

Sony, certainly, and possible Disney. But did Criterion ever get Warner on their side? I'm not that well informed about Criterion's dealings (as I'm region locked, I've never bought one of their titles before).

Yeah, Sony is the potential goldmine here but there are loads of Paramounts of the 70s that would be Day 1 as well.

Hopefully we get the other Lloyd's they've released. I love Speedy but it's not quite Safety Last or The Freshman. I'd love Kid Brother too, but even the US doesn't have that yet. I'd imagine a few folk have looked up a Criterion checklit tonight and salivated at the potential.

I really hope Eureka still have some of those Paramount titles in the works. Let's hope Criterion don't just go around buying up every catalogue they come across, or we'll be forced to buy everything from them and the smaller labels will be forced into more obscure corners or even start to drop off. I damn well hope it never comes to that.
