Default Need a new sub, demo'd a SVS SB-2000 and underwhelmed

Hey all,

My old Velodyne F1500R is no more sadly, cant really fault it considering it was like from 1995.

That said i need a new sub (or a pair), went to best buy and listened to a SB-2000 (I was thinking either 2 of them or a single SB16-ultra) but it seemed rather underwhelming. Maybe i am just spoiled by the F1500 and i know it was a 15" drive vs the 12" in the SVS but the F1500 was only 250w.

That said i live in an apartment (I am on the ground floor and really only have to worry about the apartment above me) and my goal here is good full sound but it doesnt have to be earth shattering which is why i was thinking of a pair of the sb-2000's.

The velodyne despite only having 250w really really filled the room well.

What is your budget for the new sub/s?

In your apartment, you only have to worry about the apartment above you? what about next to you?

Are you using your memory of the Velodyne in your apartment compared to hearing the SVS at Bestbuy?

Yeah the way my apartment is laid out i only have to worry about folks above me (unless i went insanely loud then i could probably bother people across the hall)

And yes im comparing the velodyne in my apartment to the SVS in the best buy listening room. My room is only 12x14 and i am sure the room at best buy was quite a bit bigger than that but i figured the SB-2000 would still be able to fill that room decently

You might want to check out Power Sound Audio. As long as you're not attached to a servo design, you can get a 15", 18" or dual 15" drivers.

https://www.powersoundaudio.com/pages/subwoofers

You could also try the SB-16 Ultra in-home with their free trial.

Sorry for your loss.

Are you getting any power? It might be something as simple as replacing a fuse or the amp if you're so inclined.

If repairing is not an option or you would prefer something new BMill made an excellent suggestion. A lot of the internet direct companies offer free in home trials. That way you get to dial it in. Watch movies and listen to music that you are familiar with. You will truly see if you like it or not.

I listened to a SB16 at Best Buy and was underwhelmed compared to my MFW-15, but I got a deal on a PB16 Ultra and I’ve only had it a few hours but it’s amazing so far. Look into one of these if it fits the budget.

I also recommend you look into Power Sound Audio. I currently have two of their 15" subs in my system and they're awesome. Also their customer service is second to none.

I had a PSA XS30 and it was completely under-powered compared to my Paradigm Reference sub 15.

I want nothing to do with internet direct companies for subs at this point in time.

Paradigm make great subs, perhaps check them out??

I bought a Hsu Research VTF-2 mk4, and have been incredibly pleased. Rattles the dishes in the kitchen during testing, warbled my ear drums playing Midnight Special. Outstanding value subs, though you have to pay shipping (you do with others, they just bake it into the cost of the sub).
