I remember someone asked about it on Facebook years ago and Twilight Time confirmed they had it but were awaiting a new scan but it had been so long I forgot about it.

And let me be the first to say: Afghanistan banana stand!

I just asked Twilight Time on their Facebook page for any details. This was their response:

It's a brand new (just completed) 4K transfer - no other details at this time

Wow! This is amazing news.
I always wanted to watch this back in the late '90s when I would circle films in the "movie guides" (ha, remember those) but could never find it.

I read the book a few years back, and I had heard rumors Twilight Time was going to get to it sooner or later so I held off on watching the movie, glad it's coming out soon so I can finally see it.

Seeing as how this is from a new 4K master, what are the odds it's going to be saddled with a teal heavy color grade?

Or, as it was known outside the USA after it flopped Stateside and was marketed as a modern-day Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid...

...a title Peter Yates absolutely loathed. They really should have gone with Afghanistan Banana Stand.

Now, if only we can get a remastered 11 Harrowhouse for a perfect double-bill.

A film one critic described as a tragic spelling mistake (I believe he was referring to the word Shot, but I could be wrong).

It's surprising how many of Westlake's Dortmunder novels have been filmed - there's also Why Me?, What's the Worst That Could Happen? and three versions of Jimmy the Kid - since absolutely none of them ever made any money (though bizarrely the Gary Coleman version of Jimmy the Kid grossed more than The Hot Rock, but that might just have been the inflation talking).

As one could guess from my user name/avatar, this is a Great Day!

have a crappy HD download somewhere, but the notion of a 4K scan (from the original neg?) is just beyond all my previous hopes. It's not an especially adventurous film, photographically, but 70s NYC looks fantastic on anamorphic plastic. One would hope that, if possible, Fox would have done a reference consultation with Ed Brown, the DP, who think is still with us.

Now, what we need is a Soderbergh commentary on this gem. The guy worships this film; watches it at least once a year, religiously. As is only right & proper.
Sadly Peter Yates has gone to his great reward, and don't know how William Goldman is holding up these days, but it would be quite something if he and SS could unite in yak for this disc.

know Soderbergh avoids solo commentary tracks, so if all else fails, would kill to hear Soderbergh & Fincher do a track together. have no clue if Fincher likes the film; don't care. Just to hear those two talk about any film would be an education in itself, even if it was "Baby's Day Out"...

.

I think Lawrence Block, a close friend of Westlake and great admirer of his writing, would be great on a commentary track with Soderbergh.
