Those are not facts, that is your opinion.

If one of the mentioned points of charging a fee is to get rid of the not so serious AV enthusiast, the membership fee will function as intended.

It will thin the herd as desired.

It's odd on one hand you have a board like slashdot where nothing is really discussed just a flippant comments are made. On the other side you have people who do not want to have any discussion on certain subjects and demand removal.

Is this the sad fate of all boards and once tight communities? I thank the administrators here for the space to speak. It was a very refreshing change from other forums pro-HD-DVD.

Perhaps you can make a "Veterans of the War" board with posting limited? I don't know. What is the future of Blu-Ray.com going to look like? Maybe others here are also concerned and would love to know the direction. Perhaps this thread could be a vehicle for that.

Goodbye and thanks again. It was fun. For myself, this place isn't worth it to be here at this time.

maybe if the overzealous mods went after the overzealous kids without wallets. show them this isnt their playground.
theres way to many "cool" internet peoples , posting the cool links , posting the cool quotes. I've clicked on many topics with the topic starter offering nothing except the opening line "discuss". wth is that about. and if you dare call them out it looks as if your the one rideing the ban train.
I use to read these boards long before registering and they have changed.
too bad.

Make it so you need X number of posts before you can create a thread. Then, make a new member sticky thread that these people can ask questions or post things in. This will eliminate some annoying and redundant topics from new people.

Also there should be a "hazard" link to every thread or possibly every post. If someone posts an inappropriate thread or post users can click the "hazard" link which reports it to mods. The more people that click on the hazard button obviously the high level of attention it gets. You can also dictate which users can use the "hazard" button by total posts, overall activity, or other traceable stats.

Imo.. these are some simple things to improve redundant posts and overly annoying posters in general.

EDIT: I now notice there is a "report post" link. It never drew my attention before now.

Pretty much a post that contains no substance or adds anything to the active conversation taking place in the thread at the time. Have not see many post *****s here actually, which is a breath of fresh air from most other sites.
While those are one type of post whoring (the one worded bandits), I would also mention excessive off topic posting, using the boards as a feeler for how funny you think you might be, too many personal discussions, etc. It's one of those things where if you go to the main page, and you see you are the last poster in about 3 or 4 threads, you are probably "doing too much" IMO. I find the less is more approach is best on these boards. Some of the most compelling posters here: Spankey, Goldenredux, Phloyd, PeterTHX, Writesimply, Deciazulado, Rob Tomlin, NYG, JTK, AV integrated, etc. (just to name a few) Don't have a bazillion posts necessarily (especially considering their tenure here) JTK you are the exception yet of their posts, the substantial information and topics they discuss are generally 90% merit, 10% B.S. (or less) any of those Members are model citizens as far as who to emulate "Style wise" on the boards. If everyone were like them here, this would be an even more special place than it already is. While the occassional comedy is refreshing, too much of it (as with anything) gets old and distracting. I can also apprecciate the personal touch some members add to their forums, I personally have made several friends here (by coincidence) And am thankful for that, though I don't reccomend this be a place as your main social outlet in life, there is too much to do Offline Like watch BD's

Same with post whoring

Sometimes, when I see people say there isn't a problem, the reason they aren't noticing it, is because they are part of it. It's a good idea to grip the mirror occasionally, it's stunning who you might see looking back at you.

I know on some boards you have to read the FAQ before you can post, and click that you agree you've read it before posting, I guess it reduces the amount of redundant questions because not only have they (or should have) read the FAQ, they will know where to look for that type of redundant newbish info.

I think the new "FAQ" should be visible next to the "Forum", but we've changed the welcome e-mail anyhow (we were actually a few hours earlier than this post!)

The new member is now sent a link to "Posting and you..." http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting

and a clear notice to first use the search function.

That reminds me of those cheesy training videos they make you watch when you work in the "corporate" world. I will have to pass on that, almost degrading

This is the actual line in the e-mail:

"If you are new to online forums and how they work, we strongly recommend
you to check out this informative and fun video:
http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/posting"

It's supposed to be both fun and that you should learn something from it... should we phrase it differently or skip the idea altogether?

I would make it optional, as in a need help posting? New to forums? Watch this quick informational video for everything you need to know.

Need a video like the one they have for the blu-ray training, For new adapters it explains alot about what High def entails and provides and explanation for i vs p, lossless sound, studio support and so on.

Maybe a good you tube assignment

Report them please.

The number should go down by now... Also, the forums will look cleaner tomorrow with less '"Moved:" stuff in it.

I think it's pretty funny, and good for someone who is a n00b at forums, or needs to learn some forum "etiquette". Should be optional but encouraged, and even though the FAQ is definitely noticeable, I think they should be directed there in a welcome e-mail, it would certainly cut down on people having to say, "Check the FAQ.... check the FAQ...".

Also, in the FAQ area, I can't add anything myself, but I think there should be a section answering questions about profile 1.1, and profile 2.0/BD-Live, a lot of HD-DVD'ers will be coming here asking about those. Just some more thoughts.

+1 Jim and +1 to Iceman who posted a few posts following...

It was a while back I suggested the education thing as a Mod-controlled or an Expert-controlled Wiki within these forums. A format had not been worked out at that time - but, now it sounds like there is opportunity to develop this "education / information" kind of threads here.

I'll go looking for the thread/posts and see if I can find them.

Rup.
