Great to here they have given the Streetfighter films filmic transfers and the caps show a nice helping of grain, as it should have.
Will definitely watch the Japanese audio with English subs for the first viewing and on a repeat viewing, will watch the English dub. The English dub sounds like a larf, from what I’ve heard of it on viewing True Romance. Will be interesting to see how much is lost in translation with the SF English dub. Only other Japanese film I have as a frame of reference for how poor a dub is Akira. I owned the original English dubbed VHS up until I bought the BD. Due to viewing Akira many times, I was very familiar with the original English dub. Was quite surprised to how different the actual dialogue was when watching the Japanese audio when reading the subs. There were quite a few liberties taken with the English dub. I did 3 years of Japanese in high school, so I can usually pick up 10-15% of the dialogue in Japanese films (“tourist” level Japanese is what I call my rudimentary understanding of the language). So when I watched Spirited Away recently, I sometimes catch some bad subtitling (eg. The father shouting “Sumimasen!” at an unattended restaurant was subtitled with an “Anyone there?” when the literal translation is “Excuse me”), I hope they have used a seasoned translator for the Streetfighter Collection. |

Well, for the third film at least since it has been streaming in HD for years. The last time Toei Channel showed Return it was also marked HD. I don't know if it was new or old scan, but the Toei DVD from a decade ago was excellent so might not matter. The first film I don't recall seeing broadcast / streamed in HD anywere. And Toei's DVD was really soft so that source wouldn't suffice for BD I guess... |

I am so looking forward to this release. As a fan of the first film, I could never tell if the film was legitimate or a parody. Chiba's facial expressions do not verge on comedic-they are De Niro over the top ham fests to the Nth degree! Chiba's smelling his fingers, then wiping them on the eye gouged victim, seems a nod to Chaing's(two years earlier) Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires, the castration(testicle removal actually), and the forever memorable "Street Fighter Dummy" scene make this a cult classic above the bar!

Yeah, my Amazon order currently says they don't have any information as to when I will get my pre-order in. Close to cancelling it, and just ordering from Diabolik.

There was also another situation where “Eh” was used, which is more akin culturally to “Huh?” or “What?” but something else was used. I have to go back and check, but it is really interesting to also note differences in the UK and Aussie translations. Translations for subtitles are not a perfect science. But I have often found dubs are worse, especially with Akira, where often, very different things are spoken. ![]() All in all, it can be frustrating knowing a bit of a language and reading the subtitles. As an extreme example of this phenomenon, my Dutch friend who can speak German has trouble enjoying those You Tube clips of Hitler rant parodies from the German film Downfall, where the translation slams the Prequels, reacts to Trump winning the US election and other various pop culture references. My friend says he just can’t get into it because he is understanding the words and trying to read the “false” subtitling set-up for comedic purposes... It just doesn’t work. https://m.youtube.com/user/hitlerrantsparodies Kind of what happens when I read English subs for Japanese audio and there have been some liberties taken with changing the translation, sometimes for better, but often for worse. I hope the Shout Factory subtitles, while obviously needing to consider culturally appropriate translations, also does consider that quite often, the literal translation does not need to be modified. ![]() |

Yeah, this has been happening with almost every new release that is not from a major studio. I was given about 5 different stories about Sister Street Fighter (which Amazon still does not have in stock) as to why they haven't/didn't have stock. It's gotten really bad the past 3-4 months with no, or unavailable stock, on many different films and distributors.
