Definitely add time stamps and descriptions of any distortions you find to this thread so others can see and check. Did you (or anyone else) notice any issues with regular dialogue or sound effects or the musical score? So far, it sounds like only actual songs in the movie are affected.

Here are my time stamps for the Killers song and the Sarah Michelle Gellar song that I sent to Arrow:
While it is throughout the entire musical scene, it becomes extremely noticeable in chapter 7 around time stamp 1:18:48. It kind of sounds like the music was played through a fan. It has this buzzing effect that is extremely distracting. I could attempt to take a video with my phone but I’m not sure that would really capture what I’m talking about. I noticed it during the Sarah Michelle Gellar song in chapter 6 at 1:04:32. I’ve checked a few other scenes with music, and a lot of that has a buzzy quality to it as well. I checked the Cannes cut again around the same point for the Killers song (in this version, it’s at chapter 7 at 1:26:28) and I noticed this effect was present here as well, but much less pronounced. (Same with the Sarah Michelle Gellar song at 01:01:47 on this cut) |

Well, I was able to finish the film last night. (Cannes Cut). This is a movie I really WANTED to like. With such an amazing cast and talent involved, it just in a way feels like waste. At the end the day the differences between the Cannes Cut and the theatrical cut are marginal at best at least for me. I do think there are a lot of great shots in the film, but it wastes so much time on exposition and making sure we really can't relate to any of the characters. Nobody feels real, and that might be the point, but it didn't work for me.
At the end of the day, if you love the film, buy this release. It's amazing. Just don't go into it expecting the Cannes cut to be something that will change your opinion. I do wish Richard Kelly was directing films still, and I'm surprised he hasn't done anything since 2009. |

I picked up the old Sony release and checked and that definitely does not have any distortion at all. I also noticed the vocals for "Wave of Mutilation" by the Pixies that plays from around 0:50:50 - 0:51:50 on the Theatrical Disc and 0:54:50 - 0:55:50 on the Cannes Disc sound bad as well, like they're being filtered through a fan when compared to the old Sony release, which sounds good. I also noticed it at a few other points during some of the contemporary songs when I watched the Cannes disc and in the same spots when I checked the theatrical disc, but a bit more noticeable.
I emailed Arrow with a detailed breakdown of what I noticed, but it sounds like they will just hand-wave this as "intended" despite sounding like a error with the mix. It seems odd that it would only be on the US disc and not the UK disc when the contents are identical. |

I received a response from Arrow. They said "we've checked on the audio with production and the audio was supplied by Sony Pictures with no additional work done on it at our end and has all been approved by Richard Kelly."
Pretty disappointing that they don't seem to want to deal with this or even look into it. I also noticed, distortion issues aside, that the new Arrow release sounds a bit more robust, especially with the bass, when compared to the old Sony release, so it certainly doesn't seem like they just plopped the audio from Sony onto the new disc. |

Odd. I’ve only watched the Cannes cut from the Arrow release, but I remember thinking the fidelity sounded good, and less dynamically compressed than the Sony release of the Theatrical cut. I had seemed to recall thinking the Killers scene in particular sounded bad on the Sony, being very loud and awash in reverb. This could be a difference from the Cannes and Theatrical mixes, but I do have my player set to output PCM and decode internally, could this be a bitstream issue?

So I just made my way through:
Listening with Apple Airpods. And I can confirm that:
Well, that's pretty damn annoying... I'm gonna email Arrow Video UK, but, not to e defeatist - I don't think it will do much good ![]() |

Hmm, that doesn’t sound good... (Pun intended)
Since you got so many versions are you able to extract audio samples for Arrow to review? |

I ripped the Theatrical Cut to my HD using MakeMKV. After that I extracted the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track and converted it to a Stereo PCM Wav file.
Here's a clip of The Killers segment: https://www.mediafire.com/file/h7goz...illers.7z/file Both the 5.1 and the Stereo track sound absolutely fine to me (I listened to them with some good quality Sennheiser headphones). I also watched the Cannes Cut last week and I didn't notice any problems with that either. Someone mentioned that Moby's 'Memory Gospel' sounded very quiet on the Cannes Cut, but it sounded plenty loud to me! ![]() Last edited by Spiderwalk; 02-16-2021 at 05:05 PM. |
