Default No "Blu-ray game" category?

Hello. I'm new.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I guess I can't go wrong with the Newbie category.

Considering the many categories on this forum, I'm surprised that there isn't one about Blu-ray Games; i.e. games that typically comes on the same disc as a movie.

Professional examples are:
"Dragon's Lair" -
"Liar's Dice" -
"Bolt's Be-Awesome Mission"
"Gusteau's Gourmet Game"

It's my clear impression that these games doesn't really impress the majority - which is probably partly because they aren't really being advertised much - but I expected at least a little more attention on a forum about Blu-ray like this one.

Personally I think Blu-ray games has a great overlooked potential, especially for hobby gamedevs. Since gaming consoles like PS3, PS4 and XB1 all feature a Blu-ray player, creating a Blu-ray game means it'll run on all 3 consoles from the same disc.

One downside (for some gamedevs) is that you don't have SDL or 3D API's available. You're stuck with Java 1.3 API's, which isn't enough for everyone, but definitely provides enough to create something great, demonstrated by various sparetime hobby creations such as:
"Funky Fresh demo" -
"Metal Skin Slidetro" -

Because of my own interest in Blu-ray development, I created a proof-of-concept game myself a while back. Or that is to say, I ported an old cellphone game of mine to Blu-ray:
"Ukko's Journey" -

With this game I demonstrated a lot of the options you (as a developer) have with Blu-ray.
  • Upload / download of highscores
  • Saving of settings on the player
  • Music + sound-effects (disproving false statements found online)
  • 11 buttons on the gamepad usable (also disproving false statements)

I even added a small webserver in the game, which lets you download files from the disc to your PC or phone via your browser in your LAN.
Top framerate on the PS3 was measured to 178 fps. So, definitely plenty of possibilities, and absolutely acceptable speed too.

In an attempt to get devs more interested in Blu-ray development, I also created http://www.blu-play.com/news and posted on various Java developer forums. There was great interest at first, but then it kinda just went away again - I'm assuming because there's no SDL and no 3D API's.

Now I'm curious to see if the (lack of) interest is any different here.

Anyone?

So it would appear there's very little interest in this topic.

Nevertheless, I wanna add two titles to the list now.

"Gusteau's Gormet Game" from the movie Ratatouille.

And my own 2nd Blu-Play title: "The UFO Game!". Free to download at https://www.blu-play.com/games

Yea, it clearly belongs in the Asteriods category, but with a twist.

It is actually a kind of remake of the 38 year old "Satellite Attack" for the Philips Videopac G7000 (also called "UFO!" for the Magnavox Odyssey2).

Classic Game Room made a nice video about that game, which explains the difference between the two quite well.

I never really liked Asteriods much, but I was absolutely hooked on "Satellite Attack" back then.

That sounds like the most frustrating game ever. I don't think I'd last five minutes trying to play it.
