I'm a huge fan of this forgotten gem, a brilliant little sci-fi film with an epic scale way beyond its small budget. It's clearly the inspiration for Tea Leoni's subplot in Deep Impact.

I wonder if this will be the same recent restoration that was used on the 2014 BFI disc. It was also advertised as a brand new 4K transfer. It certainly looks stunning.

This is a solid genre film that is deserving of discovery by a wider audience. It's well-written and acted, and is a standout in writer/director Val Guest's impressive filmography!

It probably is, plus there in-house tweaking (they do like a bit of EE lately). Kino stretch what "brand new" means in terms of transfers quite a lot lately. They just mean new to the US.

Looks like it doesn't have the extensive extras from the BFI disc:

-Brand new 4K transfer by the BFI National Archive
-Hot Off the Press: Revisiting the Day the Earth Caught Fire (John Kelly, 2014, 34 mins): a newly-created documentary with contributions from Kim Newman, Marcus Hearne and BFI Archive curators John Oliver and Jo Botting
-Audio commentary with Val Guest and Ted Newsom
-An Interview with Leo McKern (Paul Venezis, 2001, 9 mins)
-The Day the Earth Caught Fire: An Audio Appreciation by Graeme Hobbs (2014, 9 mins)
-Original trailer, TV spots and radio spots
-Stills and Collections Gallery (2014, 7 mins)
-Three nuclear films from the BFI National Archive: Operation Hurricane (Ronald Stark, 1952, 33 mins); The H-bomb (David Villiers, 1956, 21 mins); The Hole in the Ground (David Cobham, 1962, 30 mins
-Think Bike (1978, 1 min): road safety film with actor Edward Judd
-Illustrated booklet with extensive credits and newly commissioned essays from John Oliver and Marcus Hearn
-The Guardian Lecture: Val Guest and his wife, actress Yolande Dolan are interviewed by David Meeker, filmed at the National Film Theatre (1998, 63 mins)

I'm curious if it's the same 4K transfer from that disc, it must be.

Finally, a release date! I saw this film when it was first released and was at an age where I was noticing Janet Munro as much as all the other stuff going on. Anyway, it’ll be nice to upgrade from my ancient Anchor Bay dvd.

Glad I read this. I guess I'm going with the BFI release.

Seems interesting...I usually enjoy films like this. I will make it a point to pick it up.

It is, but it plays with the STOP, TOP MENU, TOP MENU trick.

I tried and no luck , Tried some others discs some work and some don't with the trick . Are some discs harder then others and how can you know before buying ? I've heard the term "hard locked" by a few .

Or just do what I did in my signature. Buy a cheap region B player from Amazon UK and get a $20 current converter and now you have a full region B player without needing mods. Of course that route means having 2 players - a region A and a separate region B. I don't mind that.

There is some continental footage for this film,
looks like it is still not accounted for.

Is there a missing scene? I remember a scene where she's nude, or very nearly nude, in the version on the BFI disc I have.

First review of The Day the Earth Caught Fire is out and the Kino version seems to be cropped on the left and right sides:

DVD Beaver

BFI at the top, Kino at the bottom

Like the comment states it just seems like it's been center cropped with no resizing, from 2048x858 to 1920x1080. You can resize the older BFI Blu-Ray to 2048x1152 and then do the same crop to 1920x1080 to see that you're getting the exact same framing as the Kino.
