Default Universal Horror Collection: Vol. 4 - March 17, 2020

https://www.shoutfactory.com/product...roduct_id=7324

Quote:
GET READY FOR MORE THRILLS AND CHILLS!

Volume 4 of the Universal Horror Collection includes four tales of terror from the archives of Universal Pictures, the true home of classic horror. This collection includes such horror stars as Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, Lionel Atwill, and Rondo Hatton. Boris Karloff ignites the screen as an inventor who is kidnapped by a gang of burglars and forced to help them commit robberies in Night Key. Bela Lugosi stars in a creepy tale of strange characters, secret passages and a murderer who masters the art of "mind over matter" in Night Monster. In The Climax, Karloff is terrifying as a mad doctor whose insane jealousy over a beautiful opera singer may drive him to murder. A giant of a man is used as an instrument of evil by a mad sculptor in House Of Horrors.

I get the feeling they know that this is number four, but that they are "waiting" for the release dates. We still have a couple weeks before number three is in our hands.

I love that Shout! made those fit with the universal monsters legacy box sets. They are in the exact same format! As a collector, I love these little touches!

The only thing they are missing are copies of ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN.

Yes! I already have Volumes 1 and 2 and Volume 3 will be here soon. I hope Shout/Scream does good transfers. The highlights in this set are Night Key, which is actually more of a crime-drama than horror, but Karloff gives a great performance with an interesting story. Then there's The Climax, which was the first of only a few Karloff movies made in color. It has a "Phantom of the Opera" feel to it. The other two films in this set are also great. Day one for me.

Right! Rondo Hatton, I almost forgot. According to Wikipedia "He was known for his unique facial features, which were the result of acromegaly, a syndrome caused by a disorder of the pituitary gland." It as been said that because of this, Universal thought he would make a great horror star; they didn't have to use much make-up on him. Unfortunately, he didn't get to make many movies. He died in 1946, just before House of Horrors was released.

It's too bad Shout! didn't put both of his two biggest movies in one set, House of horrors and The Brute man.
Still, House of horrors is the better one of the two. And we also already have on blu ray the Sherlock Holmes movie The Pearl of death, which is awesome! The Creeper at his creepiest.
I wonder if we'll eventually also get his other smaller roles like The Jungle Captive and The Spider Woman Strikes Back!
It's funny because I discovered Hatton with The Rocketeer. Lothar was my favorite character simply because he reminded me of Frankenstein. It wasn't till years later I learned it was makeup (I was 7 when I saw the movie, give me a break!) and that the design was based on a real life actor who played villains under the name The Creeper! I just wished he had been able to appear in more movies. I mean, sure, there's something pretty sad and awful about Universal Studios profiting off someone with a sickness but at the same time, he was such a striking figure! When you finally see him in The Pearl of Death, ready to break Sherlock Holmes' back in two, what a moment!

I'm actually most excited about HOUSE OF HORRORS....

After these four volumes, the upcoming MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE single and THE STRANGE DOOR from Kino, that leaves only 2 outliers from the earlier DVD collections (the Lugosi, Karloff, and Universal Horror Archive sets):

THE BLACK CASTLE
CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN

There's half of Volume 5 right there. Actually, I'd prefer they release CAPTIVE WILD WOMAN in its own set with the two sequels (JUNGLE WOMAN and THE JUNGLE CAPTIVE). So maybe they can add some others that weren't collected (but released individually in the Universal Vault series)....

SECRET OF THE BLUE ROOM
SUPERNATURAL
THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD
THE MYSTERY OF MARY ROGET
THE BRUTE MAN
CULT OF THE COBRA
THE THING THAT COULDN'T DIE

...I'm sure I'm forgetting a few. But hey, that's enough for at least TWO more Blu-ray sets!

The Cat and the Canary (1939) with Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard would be cool. It was technically released by Paramount, but Universal has the rights now, and that hasn’t stopped Scream from including other ex-Paramount films in these collections.

The Cat and the canary is so good too! But honestly, The Ghost breakers needs it even more. The transfer on the dvd was nearly unwatchable. Was that one a Universal one back then?
