Default PS3 Not Upscaling DVDs to 1080

My ps3 will not upscale standard DVDs to 1080. Can anyone here confirm that PS3 correctly upscales DVDs? I had a Sharp blu-ray player that upscaled all my normal dvds beautifully, but it was bugging out when playing newer blu-ray releases, so I switched to the PS3. Unfortunately, the standard DVDs all look utterly lousy compared to how the Sharp (a low-end machine) read them. I have tried all the various PS3 upscale settings. Does this have anything to do with the little warning about "copyrighted discs" (i.e. all discs) in the upscale settings menu? Is the PS3 using that as a loophole to not upscale DVDs to 1080, or is there some kind of software limitation? I updated again yesterday. Thanks for any help.

Video Settings > BD / DVD Upscaler

Hints
  • To use this feature, a TV that is compatible with HD input and output must be connected using an HDMI or component AV cable. Also, the video output setting of the PS3™ system must be set to 1080p, 1080i, or 720p.
  • When playing copyright-protected DVD content such as commercially available DVD-Video, an HDMI cable is required to upscale the video content.
  • For Blu-ray Discs, this option can only be used when the disc is recorded in BDAV format. BDAV is a Blu-ray Disc video format. Generally, when video content is recorded on BD-R or BD-RE media using a Blu-ray Disc recorder, the content is recorded in BDAV format. You cannot use this feature on video content recorded in BDMV format. Note that most commercially available BD-ROM media now on the market are recorded in BDMV format.
  • If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].

You can only upscale factory pressed dvds to 1080P over HDMI. That is a limitation imposed by the studios on all dvd players. The PS3 upconverts all dvds to 1080P over HDMI though so something in your setup must be set incorrectly.

Make sure you have the done an internet update over the PS3 and using HDMI. Also, keep your upconverting setting on "Normal" and not the others ("Full Screen", etc.)

Thanks for your responses. I am using HDMI (the same one I used for the Sharp blu-ray player), the "normal" upscale setting, and I updated the PS3 system only days ago.

Is it possible that PS3's upscaling technique is something drastically different from Sharp's or someone else's? Has anyone compared how things look upscaled on different systems? By the way, my TV is a Samsung 52", if that helps anything.

the ps3's upscaler is the best thing i've seen besides oppo. i've used philips/sony/toshiba upconverting dvd players and they do not look as good. i have no idea why your setup looks lousy, but the ps3 should not be the cause of this.

Just because to 1080 does not mean it will look good.

Some movies don't have anything else to push.

Street fighter would be a example, star ocean upscales beautifully.

The easiest way to verify 1080p performance is by checking the settings on the TV, and not the PS3, while the PS3 is playing a DVD. Your TV input setting will tell you whether or not the PS3 is upscaling correctly.

Is the HDMI cable hooked directly between the PS3 and the TV, or is it running through a receiver?

I'm not sure what else to tell you on this one, because I've never had a problem with my PS3 upscaling DVDs to 1080p. It's been flawless so far.
