Sony Pictures Black Hawk Down (2001)

Being that I like action/adventure movies, especially military epics, I am hoping that the Blu-Ray version of this movie will be as spectacular as the SuperBit edition with dts surround sound. I just hope Sony got it right on mastering this 1080p movie with uncompressed audio. This should be Nirvana if done right. If someone happens to view this before I buy it (still waiting for my Sony Blu-Ray BDP-S1) please post your review here. Thanks much . . .

Jim

Why am I not surprized!!! Disappointed ? You bet. But my desire for this release remains unwaivered if it is indeed 'better than' my present SuperBit edition with dts sound. I'm just hoping for the 'best' !

Default Black Hawk Down Reviews

Quote:
I can't say that I'm a huge fan of 'Black Hawk Down,' but then if you're reading this, you probably could care less what I think and just want to know if this disc rocks or not. Don't worry -- it does. The video is very strong and the soundtrack awesome. Oddly, given that this is Sony's first BD-50 dual-layer Blu-ray release, it is the supplements that are somewhat slimmer than expected. However, the format's Blu-Wizard technology is promising, so if nothing else, you gotta check this one out just for a taste of what Blu-ray is capable of.

Guess he forgot about Click? Sounds like a winner!

Thanks! I like what he said about the Blu-Wizard capabilities and this is just the beginning of Blu-Wizard!

He really does find it hard to say anything nice about Blu-ray. Any of his nitpicks are no longer related to the encoding, or codec, but rather shots at the style of the film. I'm sure the movie will be as transparent to the source as can be.

It's hilarious. You can literally see this guy gritting his teeth in angst and pain because he can't bash this disc outright like he wants to so badly along with anything else that has a BD logo on it.

That review site has zero credibility in my eyes at this point.

For my money, this is where it's at right here: http://www.hometheaterspot.com/

Chad Vardanore for Blu-Ray reviews (he needs to post here more often. ) and Dave Vaughn for HD-DVD reviews are as good as you can get.

I agree, I've learned how to translate the bias to make actual sense out of their reviews.

Peter Bracke doesn't have anything against Blu-ray. He wasn't thrilled with the launch titles but he's been fair on everything else. Blackhawk Down does have some scenes where stylistically it looks grainy but clearly this is going to be a standout title.

Now deliver Kingdom of Heaven DC so I can see the "real" version and I'll be your huckleberry.

i love this in the review...

Also a bit overboard was the choice to cast what seems like every even semi-recognizable male actor in Hollywood, even in the smallest part. Watching the film soon becomes almost like a party game of "spot the cameo." Look, there's Ewan McGregor! Orlando Bloom! Jeremy Piven! Eric Bana! I know such a complaint may sound childish, but I couldn't help but feel that 'Black Hawk Down' would have been much more effective with unknowns cast in the major parts rather than recognizable stars, because the men involved in the real-life incident remain faceless.
so a guy, reviewing a movie almost six years old is complaining that actors who were little know in '01 thinks that they went overboard with too many big names in (late) '06. perfect!

it reminds me of watching boiler room. you're just sitting there going, "he's in this too?" about every five mins.

Exactly! Let alone the political comments about Iraq in the beginnnig of the review. Of course some events are "fictionalized" as they are in United 93. Did he even pick up a newspaper during the 90's. This event happened. There is no substituting the events of yesterday for today. Sheeesh...

Review the damn disc. I don't need the politics.

Guess he can't watch Taxi Driver with that Academy Award winning actress in it.

exactly, he treats it like a new release than rather a 6 yr old film. anytime you review an older movie you run the risk of some actors that are famous now being unknowns in it. look at saving private ryan and let me know if any of the soldiers in hanks' platoon are not a little bit more famous now.

oh well... have to bash one way or another

just thinking about it, i wonder what we find if we review some old national lampoons material, caddyshack (and like movies such as stripes), or even a newer national lampoons like van wilder. cause really, those movies have given rise to some talent that this guy would complain about too.

Well some 60's megamovies were chockfull of stars (It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, The Greatest Story Ever Told, Around The World In 80 Days) but now sometimes only a movie buff reconizes most of the cast. A director of one of these movies said: But in 20 years people won't know who the actor is, just that it was a good performance and that's why I put him in. (paraphrased, don't have the exact quote)

The HD-DVD'ots are VERY quiet on this title. I think this is one they want, know the video and audio are top notch and have nothing to bash. Enjoy the silence!

I do wonder though why BHD and TotS are stellar releases. Could it be because they are war/action movies?
