Default Upcoming releases in Studio Canal Collection

According to the ReleaseLists site (http://www.releaselists.com), the next batch of releases in the Studio Canal Collection are due in the Spring and will include:

La Grande Illusion (Renoir)
That Obscure Object of Desire (Buñuel)
Mulholland Dr. (Lynch)
Peeping Tom (Powell)
The Third Man (Reed)

I'm especially interested in the Buñuel and Lynch titles - let's hope this turns out to be a better release of 'Mulholland Dr.' than the recent Scandinavian effort.

Optimum restoration for British classics
Optimum Releasing and StudioCanal have joined hands with Pinewood Studios to restore and preserve StudioCanal’s 1400 strong British Library Archive. First up will be restorations of Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom, Robert Hamer’s Kind Hearts and Coronets and Lionel Jeffries’ The Railway Children, each of which will be subsequently re-released theatrically and made available in Bluray/DVD.

Optimum Releasing has now taken over management of the Archive, which has been housed in Pinewood for 20 years, including direct responsibility for clip sales and merchandising of the titles. Pinewood Post Production will provide temperature and humidity controlled storage for the titles, including the construction of two new state of the art cold storage facilities on the Pinewood lot, expected to be completed by early 2010. Pinewood will also provide most of the film and audio restoration services for the film archive, and complete the planned digitisation of the Canal+ Image UK Ltd stills archive.

John Rodden, General Manager of Optimum Home Entertainment, said, “At Optimum we have a passion for great cinema and it’s a privilege to be able to ensure the preservation of these films for future generations to enjoy. In so doing we draw huge inspiration for our own production plans as in the upcoming Brighton Rock which directly echoes this great cinematic heritage.”

Pinewood’s CEO Ivan Dunleavy said, “Pinewood is delighted to be supporting Optimum Releasing & StudioCanal in the preservation and restoration of some of the most iconic and historical film titles. The importance of these titles to the nation and worldwide heritage cannot be under estimated.”

Ever since Studio Canal took over Optimum, there have been nothing but good news for film aficionados. Not everything they have already released on the market has been of top-notch quality, but there are films that have been extremely difficult to find in a decent form for years. I recently bought Tony Richardson's Mademoiselle and Marcel Carne's Therese Raquin (SDVD)...the only problem I see is: these films need to start coming to Blu-ray

Looking forward to Peeping Tom. I love that film, but never got round to buying the Special Edition DVD.

+1. And I'll bet that we'll get the UK SE DVD extras the Criterion disc doesn't have.

Last Year at Marienbad is not Region-B "locked". It is Region A/B "locked". 3 Days of the Condor is also Region-A/B, not Region-B "locked".

This may be a stupid question... but is the Le mépris Blu-ray worth a purchase? I've never seen the movie, and I'm not the biggest fan of movies older than 1968 (Night of the Living Dead ).

But, I'm a huge fan of Bardot and I have seen some of her movies. And I see that the review for this Blu-ray is very good.

You're missing out on some of the greatest movies ever made.

But yes, it's worth it. If you don't know Godard's films though, you might hate it.

Of course, it is worth a purchase.

And while you're at it, you should get yourself a copy of:

It is not on Blu-ray yet, but it is from one of your country's best directors, and also well worth a purchase

Thanks for the tip! I'll check out Höysommer, and I'm going to blind buy La mepris.

I know I'm missing out on a lot of good movies, so I'm trying to see the ones that people really recomend.

And just to make things clear; Ingmar Bergman is an exception. I've seen almost all of his movies, and I consider him one of the best directors ever. The Criterion Seventh Seal Blu-ray is my crown jewel.

Well it's in my top 10 films of all times. The Blu-ray is vastly superior to the DVD version and the extras that are on the BD are already worth the purchase - they give great insight into the movie itself, the production story of the movie and the movie in the movie - i.e. the 3 layers that constantly interact (you'll see what I mean once you see it).
