Just got done watching Terrance Malick's sophomore film from 1976 Days of Heaven. If you aren't familiar with Malick's work, he has some of the most stunning visual images in his films. So what better than to post the films that I feel have the best cinematography I've seen.
There Will Be Blood The Thin Red Line The Searchers Inglourious Basterds The Bridge on the River Kwai Apocalypse Now The Proposition Days of Heaven No Country for Old Men The New World Unforgiven The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford I'm sure you noticed they are mostly war and western movies. I suppose that is part of the reason why I enjoy westerns and war movies so much. The vast landscapes that are in those films help make the environments such a joy to watch. What films have some of your favorite cinmetography? Any suggestions on films to watch based on cinematography I enjoy? |

I'm a big Remains of the Day fan.
As impressive as the exterior/landscapes are, I think a lot of the interior shots are even more impressive. They stand on their own as beautiful shots but they also strike the perfect tone for whatever the particular moment might be. |

The cinematography movie lists can be endless, but I'm a cinematography sucker when it involves Indians, jungles, or a combination of the two:

Blade Runner has to be at the top of anyone's list even if they don't like the film. A pivotal work.
Yep, agree. All John Mathieson. He worked with Rodley Scott on Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven, which I just wrote a review about today. |

The opening of Saving Private Ryan had some great cinematography.
The City of Lost Children was also stunning. When is that hitting BD already? What Dreams May Come The Mosquito Coast Dances with Wolves Blade Runner Last edited by OG Pooh; 11-18-2010 at 01:55 AM. |

The New World, There Will Be Blood, and the Assassination of Jesse James are three of my favorite movies ever. All three contain absolutely AMAZING cinematography.
Good job having all three in the first post. I like Days of Heaven as well, but I don't like the film itself nearly as much as the above three. I'm seeing The Thin Red Line for the first time hopefully this weekend if I have the time. |

Proof that you don't need landscapes etc..... just wide shots, and tight close-ups, all taking place in the same room..... Amazing.... Amazing film! The "Dizzying" aqua-duct scenes in "The Third Man" are great..... Schindler's List is amazing also..... albeit powerful in a very somber way. Also l'avventura...... Makes me want to go to the Medditeranian sea.... |
