I've never seen this movie (but obviously know the twist). Is it as awesome as the cover art and poster would suggest?

It will be interesting to see this in HD. I know many shots because of the film stock used there are shots that are to put it mildly, dirty, and some heavy grain. I am fine with those issues because to an extent they can't be helped at all.

I have wanted this ever since they released The Omega Man.

Can't wait for this!!!

[Show spoiler]It's people. Soylent Green is made out of people. They're making our food out of people. Next thing they'll be breeding us like cattle for food. You've gotta tell them. You've gotta tell them!

so crazy, but I just ordered the dvd of this from amazon 2 days ago along with 3 other classic titles.
I should get it today.
guess I'll be returning this one "order created by mistake"
awesome news!
could you imagine if Paramount and Sony announced catalogs as frequently as Warner does?
I mean it would just be insane.

I can't wait! I lent my DVD copy to a friend and it never returned. I've held off on buying it for 2 years in hopes of this day!

This is fantastic! Vintage Chuck Heston and a nice addition to the "Planet of the Apes" and "Omega Man" cannon. Will be interesting to see how the transfer comes out, as there was considerable grain and filtering to make LA look even more polluted, crowded and oppressively hot. Hope they stay true to the films original look with NO DVR!!

You mean "DNR" ...... Although I think George Lucas is going to handle the restoration on behalf of Richard Fleischer, and he might insert a DVR, iPad, or Wii here or there to "freshen" it up

Heston plays a police detective investigating the obvious--There's not much to the movie if you DO know the twist (notice that "Spoiler" button up there, Simpsons-boiz? ), and admittedly not many today know anything else. (Would it also be a spoiler to say it's the last line of the movie?)

But as a movie, it's a good generic entry in the Pessimistic 70's-Charlton-Heston Dystopia genre, which is a unique bit of pop-movie history by itself: It's not as good as Rollerball, Logan's Run or Planet of the Apes, but about level with Omega Man and Silent Running, and better than Zardoz or Quintet--And although we've had plenty of pollution, bio-terror and nuclear dystopia, no one's ever yet realistically explored the more likely "Overpopulation" as a sci-fi eco-threat.

Cool, thanks for the mini-review. Sounds like fun. I grew up a little late for these movies, but enjoy catching up with the highlights of my favorite genres. And I like the 70's sci-fi I have seen like Omega Man, POTA and Logan's Run. So, hopefully WB will have a good catalog price for this as I'd like to check it out.

I haven't seen this since I was a kid, think I was about twelve and suffice to say it left an impression. Will be picking this one up.

Charleton Heston was in some pretty classic sci fi films from that period that have stood the test of time pretty well. Planet of the Apes. Soylent Green. Omega Man.

I would say that's the best malthusian sci-fi movie ever made.
If the world ever come to that ? will see in 2 or 3 years
