Default The Amazing Spider-Man 2

Quote:
Columbia isn’t even done shooting The Amazing Spider-Man, its Spider-Man reboot, but it has already begun working on a sequel.

James Vanderbilt, who penned Amazing, will be back behind the keyboard for the continuation of the new movie franchise.

Vanderbilt had a meeting with the Spider-Man filmmakers and studio execs yesterday outlining his take, getting a thumbs up, and will now begin writing.

Vanderbilt has become part of the Spider-Man family at Columbia, which has enjoyed great success with a tightknit group of creative people. Vanderbilt first worked on Spider-Man 4 for the studio, back when Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire were planning to continue the series. At the time, he was chosen for his character-driven approach to the story rather than a focus on special effects and worked on an outline for a trio of films.

When the project was reconfigured into a reboot, Vanderbilt was brought over to pen the new, character-focused version. (Alvin Sargent, also a member of the Columbia’s Spider-Man family, worked on the new script.)

Amazing, which is scheduled to wrap its Los Angeles portion by mid-April, stars Andrew Garfield as the titular hero and is being directed by Marc Webb. Columbia has scheduled a July 3, 2012 release for the 3D movie.

Avi Arad, Laura Ziskin and Matt Tolmach are producing the current movie as well as the sequel. The reboot series is being overseen at Columbia by Rachel O'Connor and Hannah Minghella.

Prior to being ensnared by Spider-Man’s web, Vanderbilt, repped by WME and UFUSE Management, wrote Zodiac, David Fincher’s serial killer tale starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. He recently worked on a polish of Columbia’s remake of Total Recall, which is slated to shoot later this year.

Same thing happened to Green Lantern as they already started working on the sequel a few moths ago before we even saw a trailer.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing, no one seems to be digging into Green Lantern

Yeah I really liked the trailer and hope it does good enough for a sequel but who knows. I still think Green Lantern may do well BO wise as it has that whole space/alien action movie feel that kids love but who really knows.

If I'm honest, I think Green Lantern will only do moderately well and won't be a smash.

I don't know why, I just have a feeling that because he's not as well known as others many will just ignore it.

I remember something being said about it being the "Star Wars of Superhero films" I really hope that's true, that sounds awesome, and I can still see that in the marketing, however for some reason, either they aren't seeing it, or they just don't like it because that sort of stuff is dated, they just don't like it.

I do know I haven't seen anything from the Green Lantern thread in ages.

Yeah that's why I'm really hoping they advertise GL really well and hopefully all the toys they are selling will push all the kids and families to see this movie.

I'm honestly glad they're already working on a sequel, because if they go forward with it at least they already have a script done and ready to shoot. That's probably the smartest thing Columbia could do, especially after seeing what's happened with Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 and Men in Black 3. That was the biggest problem with those sequels, and seems to be Men in Black 3's as well. So this is much better then just jumping in with no script.

Yeah not having a finished script is really coming back to bite them for MIB3 which really sucks as it has taken forever just to get as far as we are with that movie. With Spider-Man 2 we will have the script done already.

You're absolutely right. The character of Green Lantern can't hold a candle (or a Lantern) to Spider-Man in terms of popularity. It cannot and will not ever happen. The only hope GL has of recouping it's production and advertising costs will be in international ticket sales and home video release.

Spider-Man is cultural dogma, while Green Lantern is a mildly interesting diversion/footnote....at best.

Came looking for this thread to comment on release dates, thought it would have had more recent replies than March 2011! Guess everyone has been putting their thoughts into the first film's thread.

So we now know that at least two more sequels are due, which could make for a very good trilogy being as they seem to have held back elements of the plot from the first regarding
[Show spoiler]Peter's parents, what they were experimenting with, whether it had anything to do with his transformation
. And of course we got a nice tease with
[Show spoiler]the Man in Shadows visiting Connors at the end and hinting at a wider mystery. Electro? Shocker? Chameleon? Osbourne? Probably not the latter as Ifans confirmed it wasn't, though plans could change.
And, even if it weren't the latter then surely
[Show spoiler]he has to crop up at some point considering they set up his "illness" in the first film
.

All of which I'm sure everyone knows

The release dates though - looks like Sony might be copying Marvel and releasing the sequel into cinemas earlier internationally than domestically but not by a mere week - a whole two weeks. According to imdb Germany and the UK get it on 17th and 17th April 2014 respectively whilst the Netherlands gets it on the 24th April 2014. The US has to wait until 2nd May 2014.

Now of course this could just be a mistake on imdb and there's plenty of time for it to change but , even given its huge international haul compared to the domestic, it still seems odd considering the chance of spoilers for the film leaking out. Like the possible storyline that Emma Stone talks about here (don't read if you don't know what happens in the comics!).

Whatever happens, I'm really looking forward to the sequel. They got a lot right in the first part - which I really enjoyed - and have plenty to build upon, expand and improve.

I agree with you there - they have so much to build upon in a trilogy, so many themes that were missing from the Raimi films, that it could be a superb continuing franchise. The first part was very well made, and was exciting, dramatic and funny in the right balance, but did play a bit too much like teen rom-com for the first half (but I suppose that's expected, considering Marc Webb's previous film was 500 Days of Summer). Here's hoping that they continue with some decent films and don't just decide to continue the franchise for pure profit andf merchandising.

I agree with you also. A lot of good plot points from the first film will get some recognition and hopefully some answers. Really, really excited for the sequel. Hopefully, we get some information soon regarding Marc Webb returning or not. I hope he does.

I think it would be smart also to release the film in some countries earlier. It would be good to get a kickstart overseas considering that's where it will make most of it's money.

After watching The Amazing Spider-man, I think I've lost almost all of my interest in this series. It's not that it's a bad movie, it's just that there are too many flaws and dislikes that I've found about this movie, despite really liking the character. Ohh man ...Where do I begin? I didn't find the story interesting or 'fun" enough(another boring, uninspired and unnecessary re-telling of the origin yet again). Didn't like how they portrayed the Peter Parker character in this reboot and I'm not really a fan of Andrew Garfield's acting in this movie. And last but not least, didn't like the design of the spider-man costume. The only aspect of the movie I enjoyed was the action sequences and special effects, unfortunately. Overall, this reboot is a step below the first 2 Raimi's Spider-man movies, but much better than the third installment. It's hard to get excited for future sequels when you find so many things you dislike about it. Gotta give it a 6.8/10.

With that said, I hope the sequel improve significantly, regardless of what I thought about this one because I still really like the character. I will still go and see the sequel when it's released, but at this point it's my least anticipated superheroes movie of all of the upcoming movies, right below the Marvel's movies, X-men's, Superman's, and the Batman reboot.

I think it should be interesting to see where they take the series from here th the after credit scene left a lot of questions...at least it did to me because I have never read the comics. When I first saw it at first I thought the new villian was going to be Norman Osborn but Rhys Ifans and Marc Webb have already confirmed that it's not him so now I have no idea who it will be because everyone has given a different opinion on the matter.

Wasn't there an arc in the comics that Peter's parents were agents involved somehow with the Super Soldier program? Of course, this would have been way back in the days.

If that's a real story arc, then that would be a very good tie-in to an Avengers sequel, wouldn't it? Maybe Spider-Man might be joining them next time, then - well, I'm hoping anyway!

I know that Sony own the cinematic rights to Spider-Man and now Disney have it for The Avengers, so it's all pretty complicated, especially since huge film companies like that never see eye-to-eye, but maybe they can work something out in the end.

I can't wait to see who the new villian will be. I thought The Amazing Spiderman was very good and it was refreshing to see a new villian in a comic book movie. We were lucky this summer to have The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spiderman, and The Avengers. For myself, my anticipation for each movie was based on the villian. I was excited to see Bane and the Lizard, but did we really need to see Loki again (and I can't even remember the name of the army that Loki brought to Earth). As good as the Marvel movies are, I always find their villians to be a little weak. I also liked the darker tone of the Amazing Spiderman because it left a little bit of uncertainty of who was vulnerable.
