Rotate out some huge threads?

Just a thought. Some of the threads are HUGE. Might be cool to lock, create an archive subforum to save closed threads to, then make new versions.

Thoughts?

Some of the people that created some of the larger threads don't even participate in them anymore.

It would be nice to have newer threads so the first post can be updated with relevant links and information.

There are instances where your idea could be helpful. Just pm one of the mods and we will review it.

Always something to say...

It is a good idea to use archive and start new threads occasionally. And yes, large threads could 'take up internet space' and hinder the performance of a website.

Q: Do large threads slow town the average forum speed?

A: Very likely, especially if they are popular threads and getting views, vBulletin has to count all the posts in the thread before it splits it into pages, so if you've a lot of users reading those threads then it'll be doing a LOT of processing just to display it.

Take a look at your slow queries log and you'll get a better idea of what's causing the forum to take it's time. Out of the box vB uses the myisam table type which will lock the post and thread table while the thread is being generated so this will slow down all the other thread display requests that are pending.
