Default List of DVDs to Keep Even Though the Movies Were Released In Blu

Even though many movies were alreaty released in blu-rays, all their bonus features in dvds might not have been carried over to blu. Thus, to have the complete collection, we would still need to keep the dvds. So, what are the dvds that we still have to keep even though the blu-rays are out.

One for sure: Star Wars Saga. Seems like many bonus features will be excluded from the Sep release of the 9 discs blu-ray boxset set. What other movies do we have to keep both formats?

I've held onto my Donnie Brasco DVD. The blu-ray release is fine but only includes the (imo inferior) extended cut.

Is it considerably inferior, or just a little? I've only seen the Blu-ray.

Eh, hard to say. A few scenes are extended and some deleted scenes were added.

I think the pace of the dvd cut is a lot tighter but to be honest there are no real 'omg, that's freaking awful' additions and I can't be sure how much of my dislike is due to simple familiarity with the dvd cut.

[Show spoiler]One example where I think it makes a difference though - the BD has Donnie trashing his apt after Sonny shoots somebody in front of him. That scene isn't in the dvd cut. It's not a bad scene and it works okay but it doesn't really add anything at that point but it takes a lot of impact out of the later scene where he's throws his tape recorder against the motel wall while being debriefed.

Cool. As long as nothing was cut, I can deal with added unnecessary scenes. I hate when extended cuts have alternate scenes that aren't on par with the scenes they replaced. Thanks.

Definitely kept my DVD copy of The Thing (Terror Takes Shape is a must have doc) and won't get rid of my From Dusk Till Dawn (can't live without Full Tilt Boogie). There are many others in my collection but these ones always spring to mind when people ask this question.

As for film cuts: I kept my Payback as I prefer the theatrical cut to the director's.

See "Definitive List of Blu-Rays without all SD extras" over at dvdtalk:

http://forum.dvdtalk.com/hd-talk/528...sd-extras.html

This special features listed are the special features that are MISSING from the BluRay.

I found it very informative. Mostly I am just adding the DVD into the BluRay case, but sometimes there are too many discs to do that to -- King Kong for example. So I am slowly coming around to the idea that it may be ok to have a BluRay shelf that has a few DVDs mixed in.

Yep, it's the same here. I've bought many 3-disc, 4-disc, and 5-disc cases for all the different editions. You can check here if you need some too:

xXx - Director's Cut is only on DVD, and it's better than the theatrical cut.

Revenge - Director's Cut is 20 minutes shorter than the theatrical cut. Theatrical version is only available on DVD.

Memento - SE DVD has the chronological version of film, neither BD contains this.

Almost Famous - Theatrical version is only available on DVD.

Because it is only important to people who buy BluRays and need to know if it is "safe" to dump their DVD.

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. The DVD had hours and hours of extras; for some insane reason, the blu-ray just carries over the commentary track.

I learned after buying the Spider-Man trilogy and selling my DVD copies that the only extras on the blu-ray set were for Spider-Man 3. That learned me my lesson real quick: now I always investigate a blu-ray and compare the extras to the DVD before buying.

I'm not really a big extras guy. If i love the movie then for sure i will check out all of the additional features...but i'd guess that that only happens with about 10% of the films i have on blu-ray and DVD.

That said, i have decided to hang on to a few of my DVD's that i have already upgraded to blu-ray.

1. Almost Famous "Untitled" cut
2. Silence of the Lambs (Criterion)
3. Star Wars (for extras and untouched original trilogy)

Was planning on keeping my Dazed and Confused Criterion DVD but with the news of a blu-ray release in October i'm sure i'll be looking to trade that one in as well as long as the blu-ray duplicates all the extras.

The Tears Of The Sun DVD has either theatrical or director's cut available. I prefer the director's cut but it was never made available on Blu'.

Sillent Hill: Missing special features.
Fantastic Four Extended Cut: Blu-ray only has the theatrical cut and is missing (a lot of) extras.
