The Best Blu-ray Movies Ever!!!!

Saw this article on Philip Swann's industry newsletter and thought I would pass it along.

Washington, D.C. (September 15, 2011) -- What are the greatest Blu-ray discs of all time?

According to the Broadcast Film Critics Association, they are: Apocalypse Now, Avatar, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Planet of the Apes box set, The Wizard of Oz and the complete Lord of the Rings boxed set.

Reuters reports that the critics named these films as the best Blu-ray discs on the market in a recent poll. However, the wire service notes that the voters were restricted to choosing Blu-ray discs from seven companies that are members of the Blu-ray Disc Association.

Consequently, the critics could not choose from the highly-regarded Criterion Collection, which has done a splendid job over the years remastering foreign films and older classics.


The critics were also asked to choose one release from the past five years, the period of time that the Blu-ray high-def disc has been in existence.

With that restriction, Reuters writes that the voters chose the following Blu-ray films as the best of the last five years.

2006-2007: Close Encounters of the Third Kind 30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition

2008: Planet of the Apes" 40-Year Evolution set

2009: The Wizard of Oz 70th Anniversary 3-disc Emerald Edition

2010: (tie) "Apocalypse Now" Full Disclosure Special Edition, and Avatar Extended Collector's Edition

2011: The Lord of the Rings Motion Picture Trilogy Extended Edition.

For as good as the Wizard of Oz disc is I have to say Star Trek is the best disc of 2009. It's one of the best blu discs ever period.

Star Trek is an incredible blu-ray but I think Avatar beats it and it's also from 2009.

Star Trek is the better movie for sure but technically wise I don't think there's been anything yet that beats Avatar, an absolute reference disc.

2008 goes to Iron Man, TDK is a good but over-rated movie and the transfer could be a lot better.

Agreed. It's a movie that I could never bring myself to buy - I liked it, just not enough for repeated viewings.

I'm completely agree with this, not one of those movies is in my collection. I have Apocalypse Now on my price tracker if I can get it for the right price i'll add it to my collection. I have no interest whatsoever in any of the other movies.

I bought mine off eBay in like new condition with slipcover about a month after its release for $15 shipped.

You know I have been trying to find the Japanese version of this because it has lossless audio and it is so dang expensive. I guess I'll just have to live with the U.S. version for now.
