Default Spider-Man comprehensive Blu-ray DVD List

Sorry for starting a new thread, but from reading the past, I just don't think anyone did the work to put it all together. After watching the new movie, I realize how much I absolutely prefer the originals and how much closer the originals were to the comic.

Now that said, while I got that little dig in, I would rather speak about the new piece of crap reboot somewhere else. Anyway, for the people that love the originals like I do and want to know anything and everything about them here is some info and pictures.

I put priority to DVD's because they were the first release. Next I included bonus discs and listed out the new features. Lastly I took out extra discs that have nothing more to add from releases forward.

I put the paper inserts together with in my opinion the superior poster art on the front(as opposed to some Tween's photo shopped mess that many on her seem to cuddle up to) and the better color photos on the interior.

I also realize that the bit rate is lower on the 2012 bluray, but not enough for me to care. PLUS if I am listening to commentary, I want to do it with high def quality, not on the DVD.

In other words, I believe that my 6 disc collections are the definitive way to get all bonus features in one tight package. Feel free to criticize or let me aware of other discs out there. Just thought I would share my work, and watching this madness one more time!

I enjoyed the sam raimi spiderman movies.. great job with the listings. I was not expecting much from the reboot and I did enjoy it very much. in alots of ways better then the original films, but also very differnt. more epic.
having said that I have both the dvds and blu rays. I watched spiderman 1 before I saw the reboot.

I consider it just behind the first two Raimi films. And I definitely like Garfield and Stone more than Maguire and Dunst.

I respect your opinion. I put a lot of work into getting this list right and with the pages upon pages of people asking what was on the original DVD bonus and what didn't make it, I just thought I would share.

The new movie was a different movie. I myself don't think it was epic at all and I laugh myself silly when people say it is closer to the comic. I could go on forever on the faults of the new movie, but alas this thread was to serve the people that cared for the original and like me more than ever want to know how to collect the material.

I think the OP is a bit sensitive to have taken offense with the first two responses in this thread. To go as far as to call us fanboys. I can understand the contempt for Goofnut's post, but I was only laughing at the second post. Geez.
I saw all 3 posts at the same time, and considering the work I put into this, I don't know...I just thought it was a little smart ass. If I am wrong, my apologies. I myself found Maguire and Dunst to have miles more chemistry and their story was much closer to the comic in that it was prioritized first. Mary Jane came first in importance and actually came first chronlogically(even if it was the back of her head).

I have yet to see The Amazing Spiderman, but I do look forward to it. But isn't it based on a different comic book series that the originals are based on? I know that sounds dumb, but I mean like there's Amazing Spiderman, Astonishing Spiderman, Spectacular Spiderman, Sensational Spiderman, etc.

As far as the originals go, they were ok, I think the second one may have been the best one. Part 3 had so much potential, but I just hated it. I watched it like 7 times time, because I just knew that it couldn't be that bad, I must have missed something or not been paying attention, but every time it just got worse and worse and it was the one that killed the series. What I did like about the original trilogy is that it in a way reminded me of the cartoon series. I only own 3 and the Best Buy Spiderman 3 Preview disc, which is odd since that's the one I despise the most. So I may go back and pick up the first 2, but I'm just not a fan of the re-release art.

No they are all based on the same original series which pretty much falls in the first 300 issues. I understand them needing to make changes, but the crap they put in...and the great material they took out is just horrible in the reboot IMHO.

When you watch the old ones(and if you are a nut like me...with extras and all), and then the reboot...you see how inferior it all is.

Web Of Spider-man, Peter Parker, Spectacular, etc. have compelling stories and many of the changes influenced all these movies...but the thrust of the story was established long before.

As you see above, I agree with you about the re-release art which is why I stuffed it behind the great movie art.

I like Spider-man 3. It isn't as good as the first two, and has problems, but I think Toby Maguire was entertaining and I have enjoyed much of his work. I think 3 is entertaining and I can't see the hate. Now the reboot...hate is warranted. This is why its sales are dismal if you figure in inflation...compared with the others...and factoring in free tickets.

The old trilogy...and this is from me being a long time The Amazing Spider-Man fan...I think it captures the comic books way better. I could list the new movie's problems for pages.

I do understand your feelings about it. I feel the same way over the burton batman films and nolans. I prefer the burton ones myself. like I said. i was expecting to hate the new reboot, ended up liking it alot. it was not perfect. It was certainly better then I thought it was going to be. would i rather have spidey 4 with the original cast? sure. its fine that they did the reboot.

its a great movie the 3D really kicks in at the ending of the movie though

Lizard was a great villain but it was weird seing a Spider man movie without the character Mary Jane

I liked the Raimi films, but the biggest problem with the third was Venom. Everything else worked pretty well, except for "bad Peter" looking like more of an idiot than a threat (most of the time). The only time I really believed it was when he accidentally hit MJ in the club; you could see the horror in his eyes.

As for the reboot, I wish they'd have either let Sam do the Lizard like he wanted, or at least give him creative credit, since they basically stole his ideas. Emma Stone was a much better Gwen than Bryce Howard, but I still missed Kirsten and Tobey. I was surprised that "shadowy stranger" was played by Michael Massee; I knew I recognized his voice, but couldn't place it.

On the whole, here's how I'd rate them all...

Spider-Man: 8/10
Spider-Man 2: 8.5/10
Spider-Man 3: 6.5/10
The Amazing Spider-Man: 7.5/10

Oh HELL YES. Its the Star Wars story all over again. I love bluray and I think it is downright shoddy how they don't license extras.

I like the new Batman Trilogy over the Burton and Batman Begins seems to age like fine wine. Yet I do think the Burton movies are lots of fun. The only thing that weighs down the original to me is the fact that the whole Vicky Vale thing is totally annoying. I just think their romance is very very underdone. I laugh myself silly when I hear her say "I wanna know...are we just going to try to love each other?".

Its really hard for everyone to see the same brilliance in movies though. I will also say that the showdown with Batman and the Joker at the end was pretty damn cool though and much better done than him and Heath Ledgers bit. I like Nicholson's Joker.

xxxxxxxxxx

Anyway, I guess this is kinda fun derailing my post so I guess I am going to break my rules. Here is a review I posted elsewhere with my rant against the new movie. Why not...if you can stand the length:

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN REVIEW FROM ME MYSELF AND I AFTER A DRINKING NIGHT OUT

Quote:
Saw the Amazing Spider-man the other night here is my review(SPOILER ALERTS). I went in not expecting much because I am a huge fan of the original series, but also spent some time watching extras on the Walmart DVD that came out, watched bluray extras on the new Spider-man re-released sets and scouring the net for any sneak peaks. While my wife cannot stand Andrew Garfield, I myself went in with an open mind with: lets see the story told from another perspective and if so many are proclaiming that it is closer to the original story, then hey that can't be all bad right?...right??

WRONGO. Lets get to brass tacks. Andrew Garfield doesn't fit. Not even close. While many of the problems are not his own, like the missing narrative that isolates the audience from what exactly is going on his mind, or the bogus half assed back stories that only serve to set up a half baked lead villain (which has an annoying retread of essentially the Doc Ock story in Spider-man 2), the real problem is that he comes off as more playing up the Twilight crowd then having an honest to goodness nerdy teenager that I would actually believe is a chemist. I could write paragraphs on this but I think the Star Tribune calling it the "The Notebook in spandex" says it better then I ever could. The same goes for the Justin Timberlake type Flash Thompson who is supposed to be a true bully and yet comes off the latest teen idol assembly line. I know this might offend some people though. Good. he he Why is it the only flawed individuals come in reality shows? It is like we feel better laughing instead of admitting they exist.

Getting back to the comments that people made where it was closer to the comic, I just have to ask myself...WHAT COMIC DID YOU READ?? Being a somewhat johnny come lately Spider-man reader. I collected quite a few of the comics and used the sales of said comics to help me move where I am a today, I also went after the essential series and read the first 200 or so issues that are not so easy to get. So lets just say through my college reading, I am not exactly talking out my ass...

Mary Jane was and is and always will be the most important love interest to Peter Parker. While it is an interesting story arc with Gwen Stacey and what is to come, the facts are that her character in the full Spider-man universe is very minor. Even Stan Lee himself said that the reason they killed her off is because the character was simply too boring! Oh and for the record, Mary Jane came first...and Betty Brant before that. The way they used Mary Jane in the originally trilogy was brilliant and honestly the way they married the two together into one character more then got the job done. Of course not only am I basing this off my own my own views in how the chemistry between the two characters came out and works, but also the millions more that agree with me when it came to the success of the original movie vs the useless reboot rehash.

Of course why stop here, look at the Uncle Ben and Aunt May character. While Martin Sheen is respectable, I find that many times over he just didn't come off as the kind uncle that shows up for like 5 minutes in the original comics. Cliff Robertson was an old school character actor and the main thing is that he stepped up to the task admirably in the first movie. When he tells Peter Parker "with great power comes great responsibility" you know he means it. Martin Sheen sounds like a yelling moron and when he goes trying to grab the gun I find myself with far less sympathy. The whole thing was played out so fast that I couldn't even feel a connection with his lifeless body. Don't even get me started on Sally Field vs Rosemary Harris. Besides the fact that Harris pulled it off better, I am just not buying Sally as some frail aunt that won't stop harping on Peter. Yet another nod to what is deemed hip and cool. I don't think Sally offered one bit of dialogue that I actually could identify with. She was a decoration from the studios because they figure if she is in Forrest Gump she's gotta work here right?

That gets me to the other problem I have with this film. Timing and flow of the story. Besides the fact that I think they are trying to cram in any amount of information they can, the facts are that what they do shove in, is just not done very well. Take Spider-man practically acting like a idiot running into anything and everything. Or how about the virtual excising of him becoming a wrestler and needing the cash and instead having him fall through a floor. lol I swear I just saw this crap on the "Not Yet Another Teen Movie" when I foolishly loaded it up on demand. You take a great director like Sam Raimi who actually understands special effects..then you pair it with the geek squad CGI only idiots of today and this is what you get with the new films..not only here but everywhere. And of course lets just forget the whole J. Jonas Jameson part. Not only will I probably be irate when I see who they get in J.K. Simmons place, but I also think...why the hell so late? Most of these characters showed up early(uh...like issue ONE), but also they were taken out and had inferior underdone characters in its place?

I could have had 5 scenes of CGI taken out to at least have one bit of story telling about what they did put in to actually make me care for the characters. Instead we get closeup of cell phones, and web searches, and tweets. I mean seriously, I get it..its a modern version, but is it really necessary to have it hammered into our heads till they bleed?

Hey maybe I am too old, but I swear there has got to be people out there that were around when Spider-man first hit big with a Marvel movie finally doing well in celluloid form(though Blade was damn cool too). It was absolutely revolutionary. It was great story telling paired with intelligent action. While I never liked the Green Goblin portrayal and the fact that they covered William Defoe's scary face with a stupid mask, at least it was a compelling antagonist that served a greater story arc. Harry Osbourne and Peter Parker triangle was a strong story point and it established great characters early. A shame that Sony pictures did not see the value in it.

Then again, I bet they are seeing now. After effectively firing...or letting Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire walk out(depending on who you ask), they have been handed less than stellar box office numbers in their place. When adjusted for inflation and the fact that tons of tickets were made up of giveaways from the bluray sales of the first movies(me included), well I wouldn't be surprised if they rethink their plans quite a bit in the future.

Was the movie entertaining? I put it in the "Eh" category, but when it follows up a fantastic trilogy(and yes that includes Spider-man 3 which I can defend some other place) such as Spider-man, yeah unlike other casual fans, I expect a little more. I expect a whole lot more then some retread riding on the crest of already laid down success.

Oh and for the record, Emma Stone in no way shape or form measures up to Bryce Dallas Howard. Just my personal preference, but I honestly feel she didn't really fit either.

Me and my wife did have fun making ridiculing the movie..when I wasn't nodding off, but mostly I thought...for a 3D movie where the hell is the wow factor? I swear the best shot was at the end when the final web comes at you...what a waste.

In closing, this is just my opinion, and after reading many months of ramblings from others I am happy to say I feel I can now come with an informed opinion. Wanting to make a more accurate picture is interesting, but simply taking a few things like him making his own webbing(and sorry, I thought that was a good change in the old movies) doesn't make it so. It was like the new director Marc Webb who's claim to fame is 3 minute music videos wanted to be so different that he dropped everything that was successful! Sorry, but Spider-man is not Batman. I don't want to see a dreary night scene fool needing help from crane drivers(LOL LOL LOL), the Spider-man I know and love was "THE FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN". When I saw the original movies I felt good. When I see the original outfit I see bright colors(not the dulled down Batman wannabe) and when I see the movie in all its brightness it captures the feeling of when I read those old comics. An innocence and purity that I had not seen since the original Superman. Sadly the new trash was not it. But hey...at least it was almost free. 12 bucks for the bluray, 10 dollar movie ticket inside package, 2 dollars at the door I still have my bluray and it is still a fantastic movie(along with the other 2 movies that make up the original trilogy)!

The movie sit in was an excuse for me to get a drink and blow my diet. Mission accomplished!
Oh one more thing my wife pointed out. Why did they have to change something so small like where he was bit?? Back of the neck...wasn't this in the fly remake?

Yeah but his idiot was kinda fun. I liked the interpretation. That is what I liked about the series. It wasn't really dark, it was comic book like while giving the audience a little more. I agree that Carnage was underdone. They could have dropped that whole thing and saved it for another movie. I still can live with it though and it ultimately worked for me.

Oh hell yes. I kill when I think of what would the new movie had been like with Sam. STUPID. As for Bryce Howard...gotta disagree. I think there was so much too her, and I would have taken more screen time with her and dropped Venom all together. Matter of fact, kill her in the third instead! Howard is not only better to me, but way hotter. There I said it. Sorry, but she is the Gwen Stacey I remember. [/QUOTE}

On the whole, here's how I'd rate them all...

Spider-Man: 8/10
Spider-Man 2: 8.5/10
Spider-Man 3: 6.5/10
The Amazing Spider-Man: 7.5/10
Here is mine:

Spider-Man: 9/10
Spider-Man 2: 8.5/10
Spider-Man 3: 8.0/10
The Amazing Spider-Man: 5.5/10...or 7/10 if the other 3 excellent movies didn't exist.

Get the 6 disc Viva Elite. They are the thinnest cases and you can get them cheap enough on Ebay.

As for the content, if you do it like I did you get everything. Takes a lot of money and patience though. Word of wise though. Most of the one's are out there, but one of my favorites was the VH1 Spider-man Best Buy bonus disc. That is some rare jewel there. I got lucky on that one. The seller was nice, but I don't think they had a clue as to how rare their item was.

The Target bonus disc was a pain in the ass too. It doesn't offer too much at all though so if you never find it I wouldn't worry about it. Though the fan who is jumping around like Spider-Man is some funny crap. Though I am sure you can youtube stuff like that and be just as entertained...me...I say what youtube. If ain't physical, I don't care.

Nice details on the sets. I do wish the HD trailers were included on the Blu-Ray discs and I also with the teaser of Spider-man was on the discs as well (WTC).

I also prefer the original Raimi version to the Amazing Spider-man with Spider-man 1 & 2 possibly being my favorite hero flicks (with Iron Man, Avengers, and Thor just behind). My preference is

1. Spider-Man 2
2. Spider-Man
3. The Amazing Spider-Man
4. Spider-Man 3

I have a copy of the Best Buy VH1 disc. I had no idea it had any value. May I ask how much you paid for it? We are talking about the DVD,right?

Good job on the first three films. But even Ditko would say (if you could get him to answer his door), is let the new ideas in.
Face it: no film has yet to make Betty the girl friend (as in the comics). Or even mention the girl friend of Flash who liked Parker (her name escapes me).
So it is what it is. And that is okay too.
