There have probably been numerous threads on this issue already, but I wanted everyone's opinion on it.
I just got the LOTR EE boxset in the mail and part 1 disc on the 2nd film in the series was in the central location of the hub but not on it at all, just lose. Given a real glimpse sans defects but won't know until I play said disc all the way through. I have had loose discs before without issues, some with issues. Wanted your take. What do you think of loose discs? Do you immediately feel deflated or when you get the time to watch the film and it has a glitch, you don't worry just simply return? "Do loose discs bother you?" 1) Yes, I put them back on the shelf and try to find another copy. 2) No, I hope for the best because Blu-rays have protective coating. |

Loose DVDs always went back unopened. It's not an issue with BDs: I've gotten a few loose ones in the mail, and they had zero scratches. Also since Blu-ray cases are smaller than DVD cases, the disc has little room to bounce around and strike the hub. An exception would be Criterion cases, which are bigger, and which have hubs with sharper edges.

I'm not thrilled when I get loose discs, but if the discs plays fine, it's not too big of a deal. Like others here, if I'm buying something at a store, and there are multiple copies, if the first one that I picked up has a loose disc, I'll grab a different copy, but I don't have any control over it when it's something that is shipped to me. And as someone else pointed out, since Blu-Rays have the scratch resistant coating, it's usually not as big of a deal with them as with DVDs.
Something that I found interesting is this.... I ordered the Superman Anthology on Blu-Ray when the price recently dropped on Amazon. When I received it, there was a loose disc. The disc, in and of itself, wasn't a major issue, but the box was rather damaged (meaning the actual movie packaging, the box that this was packed in wasn't really beat up, but there wasn't any packing inside to prevent the item from moving around). So, I contacted customer service (I even provided photos) and they sent out a replacement to me, which I received yesterday. This one arrived in much better condition, even though they didn't do any better of a job in packing it up. Ironically, though, not only was their a loose disc again, but it was the exact same disc as the first set that I received. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but it makes one wonder what's up with that particular disc hub in these sets. I was a little worried recently when a DVD set that I ordered for my sister as a gift for her Birthday which is coming up soon came with a loose disc inside of it (it's actually one of several DVD sets all part of the same series that she is getting). I was debating on whether to leave it be, return it, or open it to check the condition of the disc. I ended up going with the latter option, opening it up. I only opened the shrink wrap just enough to get the disc out. I held the loose disc directly under a lamp, moving it around to check for any signs of scratches, and there weren't any. So, I put it back in the case. My sister already pretty much knows what she's getting anyway (it hasn't really been a big secret, and it was by her request), so I vaguely have already fore-warned her that "a non-specific DVD set" that she "might be getting" in the near future came with a loose disc, so I opened it and made sure the disc was okay. She was fine with it, and said that as long as I'm the one who did it, and the set didn't come opened like that, it doesn't bother her. So all is well there! ![]() Last edited by Dynamo of Eternia; 11-28-2012 at 01:36 PM. |

The No Country for Old Men steelbook I just received had its disc loose. As long as I see no damage to the disc, I'm fine with it. But I'll admit there is quite a bit of suspense for those 10-20 seconds it takes me to open the package.

I've never bought a BD that was loose. Maybe I just got lucky. However, I just ordered some BDs from Amazon during BF. I hope I didn't jinx it by publicly announcing my luck. Because if I did, I may end up with some loose discs very soon when my order arrives.
