Default Blu-ray in linux

My company (and my customers) have been anxiously awaiting the availability of Blu-ray drives. We build a product who's function is burning large amounts of data to DVD's. As hard drive capacities get higher and higher and the price keeps dropping, we are starting to see the customer burning DVD sets of 5 or even 10 disks.

If Blu-ray was supported in one of the Linux distributions, we would be integrating these drives into our systems today. This means purchasing hundreds of Blu-ray drives at today's prices (~ $900).

Can anyone tell me about impending support for Linux? Is it planned? Is it not planned? Does anyone know how I could get support, i.e. can I pay for it?

Thank you.

Matt Schulte

Its not planned. Working with linux so much you should easily be able to find someone to write a driver for it.

Why do you say that it is it not planned?

Writing a Linux driver for a blu-ray drive is no trivial task. If anyone is aware of who I can contact about creating a driver, please let me know.

yeah thats not a walk in the park to just write a driver for linux. I would imagine there should be support for it in the near future. I might ask around over at digg or slashdot and maybe check sourceforge or something.

Are any of the members of this forum involved in Blu-ray technology and devices in any official fashion?

I know it's something of an old topic, but I hate to see it go unanswered, so...

It appears that BD recording (along with DVD recording) is currently supported by userland tools without need of explicit support in the kernel. (A bit more information on that.) So there you go, it should work right now. It was working since (at least) August, it seems. (Of course, you might want to check on this yourself, if you've got a BD drive around.)

Now BD-R support in Linux

Thanks.

Blu-ray Drives have the same issue as the DVD drive
Indeed, DRM.

Other then that, it's just a piece of hardware like another...

For the purposes of the Linux software, we weren't interested in the DRM stuff. We wanted to burn large amounts of data to a single disc. Video and DRM will come later, I am sure.
