Sometime in the next day or so my first Blu Ray player will be arriving. I've done a little searching on the net and there seems to be conflicting opinions floting around about HDMI cables. I've heard that they are all basically the same and if I were to buy one of the high priced ones I'd just be throwing my money away (true or false?). I happen to have an extra cable from my DirecTV installation (I had two TV's hooked up but the one in my Daughters room is an old non Hi-Def set so theres a spare). Can I use that cable and if so will I be getting all the picture my new player is capable of? If not which cable brand should I be looking at? Sorry if this isnt in the correct section, I'm new to this forum and couldnt locate the appropriate place (if this isnt it).

Don't waste your money on expensive HDMI cables. The spare one you have will be just fine.

It should answer your question. Spending a ton of money on a HDMI cable because it is better is a waste of money IMO & others opinions ![]() |

OP : Despite some claims, not all cables are created equal. Where the big difference lies is in quality of construction. While this does not affect everyday, normal use, if you are ever going to do in-wall wiring, or subject cables to a lot of stress (bending, etc.), you would want to go with a better cable such as the BJC bonded-pair type cables available from Blue Jeans cable.
In your case, by all means use your spare from DirecTV ... |

If this cable is not being built into a wall, and the size fits your needs, by all means use the thing. If you have a stable picture, there is no benefit substituting a "premium" cable.
If you regularly move equipment and plug / unplug repeatedly, perhaps there are some cables that will last longer than others. In this case, if your cable is accessible, just replace it. |

The simple answer is there is no difference in P/Q or A/Q with the more expensive cables, yes build quality will be better but you have to ask yourself what are you planning to do with these other than plug each end into your av equipment.
Some have mentioned going for the costlier cable if it is to be run over very long distances but my stuff is close enough together and my cables were cheap and they have been doing a super job for a few years now. Last edited by Villiam Hayes; 03-26-2013 at 10:44 AM. |

Even when you factor in build quality, you can replace a cheaper cable several times before you spend as much as some expensive cables will cost you (not that I have ever had to replace cables and mine get more abuse than a lot of people's).

Right on. No in-wall wiring, just an entertainment center and it wont be subjected to much if any movement. I'll use the one I have and the savings for more discs.

Picked up the player and a nice little stack of discs yesterday afternoon. Here's a list of what I bought:
Band Of Brothers Braveheart 300 The Departed The Town - Ultimate Collectors Edition Taxi Driver Road To Perdition Killing Them Softly Despite my armload of discs I was pretty disappointed with my local Best Buys selection. I really wanted the new release of The Terminator, Saving Private Ryan, Sin City, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Inglorius Basterds, Collateral, Ray, Walk The Line, Traffic - Criterion, Full Metal Jacket, Seabiscuit and Carlitos Way........none of which were available. Best Buy did hook me up with a free $25 gift card "for buying so many Blu Rays".......that didnt suck at all. I guess I also should have picked up a copy of Zero Dark Thirty last week in anticipation of my new player but I wanted the Steelbook version and they didnt have any. The film is now priced at $29.99 and there was no way I was going to pay that much for it. It can wait, I've got plenty of stuff to keep me busy. BTW, I tried to order the Steelbook when I ordered my player but it said "this item not available for shipping". I guess the system was thinking it was available in store? I guess I'll try again when I use the gift card they gave me. I didnt have much time to mess with my new toy much but I'll definitely be spending some quality time with it later today. ![]() |

If you have a high end system I would go with the Monster 1000hd. It shoots the 240 hrtz and 3D. A great cable.

If a salesman or friend tries to convince you spend you money on expensive cables because they are somehow better, don't believe them. CNET uses cheaper cables for their tests and many tests confirm that there is no difference between cheap and expensive cables. It's a digital signal getting bits from point A to point B. It's like arguing that more of you gets to work in a Ferrari than in a Honda. As long as the data gets to the display, then it doesn't matter how expensive the cables were that got it there.
There are no cables that are inherently better for 240Hz. As long as your cables are the right HDMI spec, it will work. All HDMI 1.3 cables are equal in ability as long as they work. http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-...-are-the-same/ |

Obviously you've not read the extensive thread on HMDI cables, quality, and how they work. ANY decently manufactured CAT 2 HDMI cable will transmit the EXACT same signal as any other. There is no need to pay the 1000% over-inflated prices of Monster cables. They do nothing more/less than any other cable.
