Do you buy 3D Blu-rays although you only have a 2D TV?

I thought I'd open up the discussion for those of us who don't have 3d TVs that still buy 3d blu-rays. Besides special features, why do we do it?

For the same reason we SHOULD have been buying those first Disney Blu-rays with the DVD before we got that first player--
You don't lose out for still getting the old-school disk in the same case, and it always helps to have more of something for later on.

pretty simple.. fork out a few bucks and upgrade..... 1.4, new receiver and TV... Blu ray will be around for about 20 yrs Im guessing.. there is no benefit to "Ultra hi def" / "4K" in Home theater, so you might as well invest now

I have officially become a member of this society. I bought the 2D version of The Avengers initially and even opened it and watched it. Then I started thinking how sweet it would be in 3D in the off chance I bought a 3D TV later on (saw it in 3D in the theaters). So, after mulling over my next purchases I bought Prometheus in 3D (for the bonus documentary). And decided to GO BACK and purchase a single Avengers 3D bluray off Ebay. So my $20 Avengers bluray turns into a $35 purchase (the single bluray disc was $15). Kicking myself for not buying The Avengers in 3D from Target for $20 when it was offered. So, when it came to buying The Amazing Spider-Man, guess what? 3D edition. So, yeah. I will buy 3D versions from now on until I get my TV which I've been doing research on and might buy around black Friday.

I don't have a 3D TV, but it wouldn't hurt to have a decent selection of films if/when the day comes

I buy the 3d version because it seems like a more 'premium' version. Like I'm getting a super-special edition or something. A lot of times the case is really nice. In cases like Transformers 3, Prometheus, Pirates of the Caribbean OST, it was the specials disc that broke me. However, I do not like that Step Up 4 is only having a 3d combo-only release. For a movie like that I'd buy the 2d. I don't like being forced to buy 3d. Most time I will do it willingly provided the choice is there.

I did this with all blu-rays I bought before getting a 3D tv. When I got the tv I was really glad as I already had around 20 3d blus. It's well worth it to just buy the better version to begin with whether you have the tv or not. You will be glad in the end

well i'm getting a 3D TV first thing next year.

and i already own a big selection of 3D films.

everybody should do this, everybody will eventually upgrade to 3D and it's better to just have that collection already.

i know some people sell their 3D discs and they'll be regretting that when they finally do decide to upgrade.

I know a few people that do this and sell the 3d disk, they end up with a pretty good priced blu ray doing that. Pretty good idea if you don't care about 3d at all.

One of my friends has a pretty good sized 3d collection, I end up borrowing most of his 3d movies to get my fix.

Also started out this way back in 2010, before buying a 3DTV. First 3D Blu Ray was Resident Evil Afterlife 3D. That was the movie that convinced me to buy a 3DTV.

20 years, I hope so. I've heard rumors Sony already has a new super HD disc prototype, holding something like 125 GB per disc, but don't quote me on that, someone mentioned that a few months ago, but I didn't bother doing research, as Blu Ray looks great as it is.
This "Super HD" would be as sharp as the images in a book or magazine, zero pixelation up close on a new "Super HD TV". I hope that day doesn't arrive for another 20 years though. If it does, they better offer backwards compatibility with Blu Ray and DVD. Nevermind the fact I won't be buying a new "Super HD" 3DTV unless it's glasses free in the next 10 years.

Yeah, when a 2DTV owner sees Immortals 2D Blu Ray on sale for the same price as the dual pack 2D, 3D blu ray at Best Buy on release week for 22$, there is not really a good reason to pass up the 3D/2D combo pack version, as you could always sell or give the disc away to someone else.

This holiday season, I will be stocking up on 3Ds. First part of 13, I'm finally getting my Samsung 64" Plasma E8000!!! So darned pumped I can hardly sleep!!! LOL I still have a 15 year old 32" CRT Toshiba. So, yeah, a bit of a step up.

This thread is a nice sign of the tide turning towards more 3D fans.

For non 3D fans, I'd guess they're not interested in wearing 3D glasses, and the examples of 3D they may have seen, were weak efforts like Clash of the Titans, after which they wrote off 3D in general. Those are legitimate reasons, but hopefully they'll give 3D a chance in the future when it goes "glasses-free" and most TV shows and movies are available in 2D and 3D.

I think I still qualify for this thread. We do have a 3D tv now but not a player yet. Had 6 titles before the tv and another 7 since.

I didn't have blu-ray until I got my 3D TV so didn't have that issue. Now I generally don't buy anything 2D at all. I am considering buying the Walking Dead series though, when season three becomes available. Not watching it on TV this year. And the Spartacus series as well. Didn't see the last season of that either.

I have a bunch of 3D movies that I can only watch on my computer. I will invest in a 3D projector sometime down the track, but the 2D Panny plasma still goes strong for now.

I buy 3D Blu ray's although I have a 2D TV, because I know the next TV I get will be 3D, plus 3D movies sometimes come on cheap, I bought Prometheus 3D for $ 20 after DVD trade in.

I bought Christmas Carol 3D way back when it was released (in 2009 or 2010 was it?) thinking all I needed were the red and blue glasses. I was pretty naïve back then. I didn't watch the 3D blu ray until January of this year when I finally bought a LG 47" LED 3D TV.

Only when

1) the 3D version includes more Bonus Features than the 2D version for a movie that I really want to own

or

2) the 3D version is the same price as or cheaper than the 2D version.

Also, I only buy movies where the 3D and 2D encodes are on separate discs.
