Default Chappie Review Thread

District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp has recruited the Slumdog Millionaire to help make his latest sci-fi slum film the slummiest yet. Blomkamp will once again return to the future's shittiest neighborhoods for Chappie, a film based on a short he made in 2004, and Patel has reportedly signed on to star as the film's human lead. As for the non-human lead, Blomkamp's old go-to Sharlto Copley will co-star as a robot cop that is not RoboCop, as Detroit isn't even slummy enough for this. This will be the most slummy.

Link.

Die Antwoord Duo Are Confirmed As Co-stars

After the burst of grim dystopia and shiny, hollow utopia in Elysium, Neill Blomkamp will be lightening up for his next film, Chappie. In development since before Elysium even happened along, it now has the backing of Sony (clearly happy to be back in business with the writer-director despite Elysium opening to a decent but hardly outstanding first weekend in the US) and Media Rights Capital.

Loosely adapted from his short Tetra Vaal (see below) by Blomkamp and his wife Terri Tatchell (who the director admits likes writing a lot more than he does), Chappie chronicles what happens when two gangsters steal an artificially-intelligent robot and tinker with his brains to help their own criminal ends.

Blomkamp’s regular collaborator Sharlto Copley is on to voice the ‘bot with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, better known as rap-ravers Die Antwoord, as the criminals (their casting was originally discovered by the Playlist). Dev Patel’s name has also been linked with the film, though he’s not mentioned by the press release picked up by Collider.

“We’re huge fans of Neill Blomkamp – it’s a real thrill to be continuing our relationship with such a visionary and important filmmaker,” says Sony president Doug Belgrad. “Neill has proven that he is a true original voice and we expect that Chappie will strike a chord with worldwide audiences in the same way that District 9 and Elysium have.”

Chappie should begin filming later this year.

I've heard for awhile that Die Antwoord would be in this, but didn't think they would have a big role. This is going to be all kinds of crazy and sounds like Blomkamp is going to do something truly different, which I don't think he did with Elysium. Hopefully we get some Antwoord tracks featured on the soundtrack as well. Looks like Blomkamp is finally going to make Yolandi a movie star.

Sigourney Weaver has signed on. This has such a cool cast.

Hugh Jackman
Sharlto Copley
Dev Patel
Sigourney Weaver
and Ninja and Yolandi from Die Antwoord.

I hope so too. D9 was amazing, but Elysium was lackluster, despite an awesome visual design and a great performance by Sharlto. Just from the poster and synopsis, Chappie already sounds like an improvement.

Though I liked Elysium I thought it was underwhelming. I have big hopes for this one too and I think he works better if there are no big name stars.

Default Chappie (D: Blomkamp, S: Copley, Patel)

Elysium had a lot of good ideas, but it the never really lived up to these. It felt like a film where the studio had had a large say over the final cut, but that is just speculation. For example there were created some truly amazing production designs that were never used.

Definitely. Seems like it has a lot of potential to be a movie that moves you or brings about those emotions you try your best to hide as a man in a movie theatre.
