Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Japan will bring a Mastered in 4K Blu-ray edition of Lawrence of Arabia (1962) to Japan on December 20th.

I don't think it will be identical, because it is two discs, meaning the film will be split over two discs. Whether that will cause much of an improvement, I doubt it. Nevertheless, I will be getting this, as I am a sheep.

That's doubtful. None of the other M4K titles have any of their extras that were not on Superbit DVDs, and LoA had no extras on Superbit DVD. It's far more likely that the discs will be encoded at a high bitrate and that because of the length of the film, it was necessary to split the film over two BDs.

EDIT: And according to SPHE Japan's web site listing, the M4K will also have a lossless Japanese: DTS-HD MA 5.1 DUB track, while it appears that our BD set, and the current Japanese BD sets, have only a lossy Japanese: Dolby Digital 5.1 track. The same site states that both M4K discs are dual-layered, and the regular BD sets have one BD-50 and one BD-25.

I received my set today:

Confirmation:

Both discs in this set are region-free.

Well, as you can see, this set is primed for a US release, with the inclusion of English and English SDH subtitles, as well as the French DUB track (but no French subs). The menus load in English, and the are the usual US copyright warnings as well.

The audio is (almost) identical (bit for bit) with the regular BD, which has been par for the course with M4K BDs.

The film is divided at its intermission.

No extras.

The only other difference to the regular BD is that the Japanese DUB has been upgraded to lossless DTS-HD MA 5.1. I sampled it, and it is an interesting bonus.

I am reserving my comments for now, but my initial reaction is that I am impressed, and very satisfied with my purchase. Don't get me wrong, the differences are small, but I would say I'm actually more pleased than I thought I would be.

I hope there's a comparison soon, Moneyball is one example where the bitrate is higher but the image looks worse on the Mi4k range.

How is the difference is quality? Is there a jump in clarity, even if slightly or does the high bitrate just better alleviate marcoblocking issues?

Probably going to buy, even if to just have a easier accessible disk that having to break into my collectors box set every time I want to watch ha.

Ok, this is odd seeing that this movie was already mastered in 4k and already has the most beautiful picture of any movie ive seen that was made in the same time period. Well, if there is in fact a notable improvement, im in!

I don't think it's worth it. The copious extras are all gone (which is the main point for me), the movie is divided onto 2 discs now, and the picture quality is barely noticeably improved. And the audio is exactly the same.

I don't understand why Sony 4K titles don't upgrade their audio. Spider-Man 1 could've been improved as well as Taxi Driver, but they did nothing with them.

'Cause it's good enough to make money for them. They need to churn out these "mastered in" discs quick, before people start wanting actual 4K.
