It's finally happened everyone! All 28 Godzilla films being released this summer on Blu-ray. Not only that, they're re-releasing the 2009-2010 editions with proper Blu-ray transfers, not the transfers used from the HDTV airing.
June for the re-release of the 2009-2010 editions. July for the rest of the series! 1300 yen cheaper than their original 5900 price! (Priced at 4700 yen) http://www.toho-a-park.com/godzilla-60th/ |

They're not up for pre-order yet it seems. Once that happens, you should be able to get them from amazon.jp or yesasia.com. Japan is region A, so you wouldn't need a codefree player - but I would not expect english subs. Hence my hope Toho will licence these to other countries/territories.

Yeah, the site says brand new transfers specially made for blu-ray. So it looks like they dumped the HDTV masters in favor of these.
No English subtitles on these discs, but loads of special features. In truth, most of us that will get these have seen these movies so many times that we know what's happening. Additionally, you can get Greenfish Subtitle Player or DVD Subtitle player to play .SRT files over the bluray on a transparent background. |

Thanks for the info. Sucks that there won't be any English subtitles. I don't have a Blu-ray drive for my computer so I guess that option's out. Oh, well.
I've subscribed to this thread and will keep checking back to see if there are any updates, especially if they're licensing related! ![]() |

If you don't believe me, check ALL of the re-release product pages and compare to one of the Toho special effects series that's NOT being re-released and it's got the SAME information/blurb about HD remastering: http://www.toho-a-park.com/dvd/item/...TBR19209D.html So if I'm missing something obvious, PLEASE point it out -- I want to get the Megaguirus one, but I'll wait if it actually IS being remastered. It doesn't look like there are any additional features being added that weren't on the original releases, either; the original information can still be found here: http://www.toho-a-park.com/tokusatsu-bd/index.html Last edited by LatemDeeps; 03-07-2014 at 02:40 PM. |

Granted, they won't be dubbed and the DVDs get one big release while the Blu-rays get split up. However, they'll have subs and basically EVERY film will be in hi-def. I'm so in, at least for Godzilla 1984. Heck, Toho's even throwing the 1998 version, although I know few people cared when it came on US blu; I just applaud their quest to completely release the series. Happy news for giant monster fans. |

To expand on that, the films that had blu-ray releases in 2009 are the only ones with details about what the discs include (audio options, special features, etc). The films getting their first blu releases have blank spaces for those things (although I'll hazard a guess that anything on the DVDs will go Blu, albeit the bonus stuff being SD.) In either case, from what I heard about the 2009 releases, the Blus will be nice looking. Not reference, probably could be improved but they should still be nice. To be fair, Toho had to pay to restore all 28 films; Criterion only did 2 (not that the later films fit with Criterion's choice of films). Just my thoughts and ideas. I'll probably buy a few, at least. |

One other thing worth mention which may be an issue for a few collectors.....
This new wave of releases including the 13 Godzilla Blu-rays which came out in 2009 which will be re-released in June will *not* have those glittery color sleeves this time around. |

Damn! That sucks! No US release and no subs or dubs. That's what make it fun. Anyone know if theyay release them in the US? I know they have the three releases soon and the sony ones, but what about the others?

Obviously, there's pros and cons to the Japanese Toho releases - the Toho dvd/Blu-rays are all the original cuts of the films in their original aspect ratios, contain a lot of extras (which vary widely depending on the film) and mostly feature the best looking transfers (although many transfers for the BRs are still less than perfect). The Blu-rays can be played in North American BR players. The downside is no English language dubs or even English subtitles, they are quite expensive per movie (about $50 - $65 not including shipping) and if you went to the trouble and cost of collecting all the Japanese dvd releases from the past decade, the upgrade to Blu-ray is hard to justify as in my experience, a good upscaling dvd player gives very close results to most of the (so far) released Blu-rays and most of the dvd extras are the same on the blu-ray releases and in standard def as well. |
