Default Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

Quote:
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is an upcoming American computer-animated superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Miles Morales/Spider-Man, produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film is directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, from a screenplay by Phil Lord. Shameik Moore voices Morales, starring alongside Liev Schreiber, Mahershala Ali, and Brian Tyree Henry.

Plans for an animated Spider-Man film, to be developed by Lord and Chris Miller, were first revealed in 2014, and officially announced in April 2015. Persichetti, Ramsey, and Rothman joined over the next two years, with Moore and Schreiber cast in April 2017.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is scheduled for release on December 14, 2018.

Plot details forthcoming.

Default Sony Leak Reveals...

Quote:
...it’s also considered bringing back Sam Raimi...
Quote:
Among other things, the studio has tried to bring back Raimi (who directed the original Spider-Man movies) to return as a director or a producer.
Quote:
But the most interesting tidbit is that Sony is considering an animated Spider-Man comedy produced by Lord and Miller.
Quote:
...and unnamed female character spinoffs...
Wow - it really seems like Sony just don't know what to do with this character. At all.

btw No good trying to bring back Sam Raimi. That ship has sailed.

SymbioticFunction is right on. Sony really, truly has no idea what they're doing with Spidey.

Sony is clearly flailing with this franchise. The next Spider Man movie will most likely be another turd.

Spidey and Sony are swirling the drain. Marvel would know what to do.

The Sony hack is interesting. No studio would ever step up themselves and say, "hey, internet - what do you think we should do with this property?"

But Sony's option has been removed from the equation -- the directions they've been considering have been leaked to the internet. It basically lays out a few (possible) directions they could go in, and they're in the unique position where they can see what people are saying about it.

They can gauge interest based on what people across the internet are saying about the possible directions - the animated film, the co-production with Marvel, bringing Raimi back.

(For the record, I don't agree with this approach. Ideally, all studios should have a clear plan in what they want to do -- especially with a character like Spider-Man. Flailing and having no idea what direction to head in is poor form for any studio.)

But I suggest Sony takes advantage of this and that they collect all the free feedback they can.

Of course, in an ideal world, Sony would have enough sense to either sell Spidey to Marvel or at the very least say, "You guys make the Spider-Man movies, work your magic, and give us a cut."

None of this "Marvel produces but Sony retains creative control" BS. Why would Marvel agree to that? Sony needs Marvel. Marvel doesn't need Spider-Man; they're doing just fine without him. And Marvel sure as hell doesn't need Sony. If Marvel makes a movie, we can be sure they're retaining creative control over it, because it's a part of their universe. The MCU is a tightly-run ship. They aren't going to let an outside studio (Sony) have any influence in what happens on that ship.

And no way Raimi comes back. After the mess he went through with Sony? There's bad blood after what he faced in the making of Spider-Man 3, and his attempt at making Spider-Man 4, before Sony said, "hey, surprise, we're actually making a reboot movie. Girl bye."

Do the right thing, Sony. It's what the internet has been shouting for a long time now: sell Spider-Man to Marvel.

While Spider-Man is all Sony has... they're going to be in even hotter water if they keep spending ridiculous amounts of money on these films with dwindling returns. TASM2 did well, but they spent so much on it that the box office returns ended up being less than impressive. What happens, Sony, if you spend another $400 million and TASM3 does worse than TASM2, after the negative reception TASM2 got? What happens if you spend ridiculous amounts of money on Sinister Six? Or Venom? Or Black Cat?

Take the Marvel buyout and run, Sony. Use the money to stop your bleeding. Invest it to start up other franchises.

Spider-Man deserves better and you've proven you aren't the right place for the webhead.

It would be the wrong financial move to sell Spidey when his movie value is at its lowest.

An animated comedy movie wouldn't be terrible. Marvel is currently doing that with Ultimate Spider-Man, turning it into a comedy show more than anything else.

An animated Spider-Man has pretty much been the only inspired idea they've had.

Sinister Six will be famous villains not in their famous costumes. Following the mish mosh look of The Rhino, all six villains will combine into a Transformers' Devastator.

With this getting out, the railing and screaming from social media to get Spider-Man into the MCU will be too big to ignore. Disney doesn't even have to do anything but just wait.

There will be a few editorials within the next few days to a week basically doing Disney's work for them, calling for Sony to "seize" the moment and work with Marvel Studios.

This will happen. There's still time before CIVIL WAR begins production.

The question will be then, who's playing Spider-Man, Garfield or someone new, singling another reboot...again.

Sigh.

The trouble is that the internet's answer is the one they don't want to hear - "Give Spider-Man to Marvel"

Very true but what's the one way to rescue the IP at this point...put Spider-Man in the MCU.

With that, Sony rescues it's only franchise and get good press about saving Spider-Man and "doing it for the fans."

It may not happen by the time CIVIL WAR begins production but make no mistake, with this leak and pressure from the fans because of said leak, Sony will have no choice but to play ball.

In the end, Disney wins.

The Russo Bros. Offered to Produce Sony's Spider-Man Films

Quote:
The real juicy stuff are from the discussions between Sony Entertainment Chairman Amy Pascal and the Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Anthony and Joe Russo that took place last month. The Russo brothers begin their email to Pascal with, "A pity that negotiations with Marvel did not work." They're referring to the proposed deal with Marvel Studios that would have brought Spider-Man into the Marvel cinematic universe by giving him a cameo in Captain America: Civil War.

They then let Pascal know that they will be directing Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2, but that obligation won't prevent them from directing The Gray Man beforehand for Sony. Then on November 17, Joe Russo sent Pascal an email offering to have him and his brother produce Sony's Spider-Man films through their newly-formed production company, Bullitt. He acknowledges that a "difficult conversation" would have to take place with current Spider-Man producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad, but Russo says it would be a "conversation worth having." As far as overtice.com knows, Pascal never replied to Russo's offer. Keep in mind, Sony's computer system was shutdown just a week after Russo sent that email, so Pascal very well could have by now.

Brazilian website, overtice.com, came across some other great tidbits. In previous emails, Pascal begged Sam Raimi to help her with Spidey but in another email she tells a Sony exec that she doesn't need his help because he went "Joel Schumacher on the third." I'm sure Raimi won't like being compared to the Batman & Robin director. In a separate email, Avi Arad begs Pascal to give him the green light on a Venom movie because the toys and video games based on the character are popular. Lastly, Motion Picture Group President Jeff Robinov warns Pascal not to make a deal with Marvel, but you have to question his advice as he still thinks Stan Lee can create more characters in the Spider-Man universe for Sony.
[sarcasm]Pascal sounds like a fantastic leader, capable of making smart decisions and being confident in the actions she takes. [/sarcasm]

Venom or Carnage Could be Main Villain in Spider-Man - Sinister Six Team Up Film

Quote:
The "Sony Hack" continues to produce tantalizing behind-the-scenes information regarding Sony's Spider-Man franchise. The latest emails to leak online involve Spider-Man film producer Matt Tolmach, Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Amy Pascal and Columbia Pictures president of production Michael De Luca. In it, Pascal informs De Luca that Tolmach would like to introduce Venom into the Spider-Man franchise, but doesn't think the character could support a film on his own. He would rather introduce Venom in the Sinister Six film. And that film will feature Spidey teaming up with the Sinister Six to take down an even bigger threat. Who could be more dangerous than the Sinister Six? Tolmach would like the main villain to be either Carnage or Venom. If it is the latter, Spider-Man will wear his black suit in the film. He'll remove it when he can't handle being teased about the look by members of the Sinister Six. I kid you not. And of course, whoever finds Spidey's discarded suit will then become ... VENOM!

By the way, kudos to Badass Digest for accurately reporting most of this information near the beginning of October, a week before this leaked email was produced.

In the follow up email, De Luca explained to Pascal all of the options their Spider-Man franchise had in front of them at that time. He brings up the previously-confirmed deal Marvel Studios offered Sony, which would allow Spider-Man to join the Marvel cinematic universe. To be more specific, Spider-Man would make a cameo in Captain America: Civil War. If the deal was agreed upon, De Luca reports that Marvel would introduce A BRAND NEW SPIDER-MAN. See you later, Andrew Garfield. De Luca seems gung-ho about the cameo. He thinks it could spark new interest in Spidey. Fans would look forward to Spidey's next film without Sony having to make a Sinister Six film just to put fannies in the seats. Either way, De Luca would be happy with whatever direction Marvel president Kevin Feige chose for the Webhead.

That's all based on the deal with Marvel actually happening, but as of right now we know it hasn't, and De Luca addressed that grim possibility as well. Wisely, De Luca proposed another Spider-Man reboot, but this time, it won't spend a lot of its time on Spidey's origin or his parents like The Amazing Spider-Man films did. De Luca also thinks Venom, Carnage and Hobgoblin would be nice additions to a reboot. He especially likes Ultimate Venom because his suit isn't formed from an alien symbiote. He'd like to explore the modern Spider-Man comic book stories written by Michael Bendis, Michael Strascynski and Brain K. Vaughn.
Spidey takes off the Black suit because he gets teased? What the hell, Sony?

Sony has no idea what they want to do or how to do it.

If it means getting good films again, that should be the answer. Sony has proven without a doubt, especially since this hack, they absolutely do not understand the property. I think going home to a studio that understands and loves the universe is where he belongs. Maybe it's just me, but I rather like the idea of seeing Spidey in the MCU, and being handled properly. There's nothing left for him at Sony, other than more missteps and heartache for fans, and more money being hemorrhaged by Sony. In the end, it's best to cut loses and just turn to Marvel.
