Default "Sony Hack": Future of Spider-Man Franchise with Sony or Marvel

IGN: Parent company Sony Japan not happy with Sony USA's handling of Spider-Man, may still want to renegotiate with Marvel

http://m.ign.com/articles/2014/12/10...-man-situation

Quote:

While that revelation came via leaked e-mails and documents (more fallout from the Sony hacking scandal) uncovered by The Wall Street Journal, today Latino Review reports on some additional inside info on the subject.

For starters, LR’s Da7e says his source indicates that the deal Sony ultimately rejected was not a Marvel trilogy of Spider-Man movies that Sony would control. While that was mentioned in The Wall Street Journal’s story last night, what Sony finally passed on was instead a co-production arrangement where Marvel and Sony would split Spidey movie costs 60/40 (Marvel paying the 60%). Yes, Marvel would’ve shouldered more cost, but they also would’ve regained creative control over the character and films. This scenario sounds much more like the kind of deal Marvel’s Kevin Feige would be interested in.

So that makes more sense in a real-world sort of way, but still, Sony reportedly passed on this approach, preferring to keep Peter Parker and his alter ego in their creative corner.

That said, LR’s sources also indicate that Sony Pictures’ parent company is none too pleased about the current situation at the studio and the internal communications and even movies that have leaked out. Additionally, they view “Sony Pictures’s handling of the Spider-Man property as disappointing. … Sony Japan thinks the Marvel deal for Spider-Man is still on the table and they want to renegotiate as a return to quality.” The sources also say that “the 60/40 split” can be negotiated and “Sony Entertainment’s October hard-line stance of wanting creative control is now mostly moot in the eyes of the higher-ups.”
There's an online petition now for it too:

I want this to happen so bad. Keep Garfield as Spidey though.

I don't want Garfield back (nothing wrong with him, I just want a different direction) but I seriously cannot cross my fingers enough for this to happen.

Hopefully this happens! Then after the impending train-wreck of the new FF movie, Marvel can hopefully snag them.....

If this ever happens, it will be MEGA! Just imagine how well Marvel would handle the wall-crawler, and that's coming from someone that actually likes ALL FIVE Spidey movies to date. Not even that, but think about what'll they could do with his rogues gallery. IMO Spidey has one of the strongest sets of villains among all their heroes.

I absolutely adore Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man but I'd want Marvel to start fresh with him.

Please, please, please!

Agree. I love The Amazing Spider-Man films passionately, especially 2, but Marvel would make a great film I'm sure. While I would hate to lose Garfield now, he is getting beyond the appropriate age now anyway, and at the snails pace Sony is moving at with the series now he will likely lose the role well before they ever decide to make another film so… Yeah maybe this is for the best. And I can still enjoy the TASMs, especially 2, for the great movies they are. And then prepare my body to embrace whatever perfect storm of awesomeness Marvel can concoct.

Am I the only person that thought Garfield actually got better in ASM2? I thought he was awful in the first one, but okay in the second one. Maybe it's because everyone else was so bad?????

Ah, I was hoping that Sony would keep c0ck-blocking Disney and Marvel. It's been hilarious.

Anyways, I don't think Garfield is the problem. ASM2 sucked (almost my bottom of the year) but as far as I could tell it wasn't Garfield's fault.

No shot at Garfield returning if this happens. Marvel would want to start fresh and cast their own Peter Parker.

And yeah Garfield wasn't the issue, but I am not his biggest fan as Peter Parker. No.

If they stick with Andrew Garfield then I am happy. No need for another reboot.

Considering what happened in ASM 2, Spider-Man does have motives to play an integral part in Civil War. But it looks like Marvel wants to scrap everything from ASM and basically start the character fresh.

The best thing is for Sony to allow Marvel to use Spider-Man in their films (but not in his own solo MCU films) while Sony keeps making the ASM movies, while being able to reference the stuff going on in the MCU (of course with Marvel's approval)

Ideally what I would like to happen (and what would be most beneficial to Sony) is get the deal done asap, then put a end credit teaser of Spider-Man in Avengers 2. He would then appear in Captain America 3, then there would be a Sony ASM film released in 2016 to capitalize on the increased popularity of the character. Only problem is the clock is ticking and with scrip rewrites and stuff they are running out of time.

It was Sony's fault. Garfield even came out not too long ago stating that there was too much studio interference. Same with James Horner who backed out of doing the score for the second film. Basically, Webb gets more hate and blame than he deserves. It's another case of Sony *cough*AviArad*cough* having their head up their ass like Fox and thinking they actually have some kind of talent and know how to make a good movie. Marvel shouldn't make any deals that leave any amount of rights to Spidey with Sony.

Maybe Marvel can get 75% now. If they can get a deal to work so they are making the films and Sony is the distributor and pays a portion of the cost only then I would be for it. As long as Sony has no control and no say in anything that happens this is a win-win situation. Recast fresh with a new Spider-Man and we are set.

I would be ok if they had no control whatsoever but personally I hope they realize how screwed they are in regards to being close to going under as a studio and sell the complete rights back to Marvel/Disney. It would be nice for Marvel Studios to have 0 ties with another studio. Then it would just be Fox.

SlashFilms: Possible details on Marvel's plan for solo Spider-Man films if Rights were retained from Sony

http://www.slashfilm.com/andrew-garf...derman-recast/

Quote:

The latest update is a few of the details in those now legendary Marvel and Sony talks.

Apparently, if a deal was worked out, Marvel’s plan was to completely distance their version of Spider-Man from everything Sony had done with the character. That means recasting Andrew Garfield.

Latino Review is reporting details of what Marvel would do if they were to acquire any stake in the Spider-Man character.

Marvel wouldn’t want any confusion with Sony’s films. So Sam Raimi, Marc Webb, and all the work they’ve done would be ignored. (Granted, Webb’s films already ignore the work Raimi did.)

Also, Marvel believes audiences understand the Spider-Man origin and are sick of it. If they were to get the character back, he’d already be Spider-Man when we meet him. Hence the idea of him popping up in Civil War.

Marvel’s idea for a solo Spider-Man movie is to push the romance away way back. It would be primarily about him dealing with his dual life as a teenager and a superhero, two issues that are well-handled in the best Sony Spider-Man film, Spider-Man 2.

When that movie starts, he’s Spider-Man and it’s difficult for him to balance that with his real life, of which Mary Jane is a part. To Marvel, that’s the best of the character and would be their focus.

That’s 100% the right idea.
