USA Starchaser: The Legend of Orin (1985) [No 3D Blu-ray]

If you have a stereo 3D TV, this clip shows close to what it would look like on it. Amazing this was from 1985 or so. High medium to strong 3D in Star Chaser 3D. EDIT: Just watching that again with the suggestion of a upcoming StarChaser blu ray 3D release pending, I cannot wait to see this film in clear, stereo 3D remastered. Looks awesome for the most part.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starcha...Legend_of_Orin

Star Chaser 3D: The Legend of Orin (1985) is a tribute/homage/rip-off to Star Wars in more ways than one, but it's still a fun animated fantasy adventure movie in my view. (Made for 15 million dollars or more).
You can find strong similarities to Luke, Obi Wan, a light saber, Han Solo, the Droids, Leia, Darth Vader, the Storm Troopers, Jabba the Hut, Bounty Hunters, space ships, laser shoot outs and even hints of Tron 1 (the flying 'Byt').

What is amazing is not only the impressive animation, but also the STRONG 3D layers, volume and even some pop out in almost every shot. Just watch past the first 15 minutes and you'll see what I mean.
Even the cel animated characters have volume. The 3D in Star Chaser is possibly the best I've ever seen in a cel animated film (comparable with Disney's Beauty and the Beast 3D), and I'm sadly basing it on an anaglyph version (red/cyan) in a lower quality resolution.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090065/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2

Why isn't Star Chaser: The Legend of Orin on blu ray 3D yet? This is on my must have wishlist of 3D films. The 3D here is why I watch 3D in the first place.

http://www.amazon.com/Starchaser-Leg...end+of+orin+3D

The DVD is out of print and the film probably sitting in MGM's vault. Definitely needs to be released again on blu ray 3D considering Star Wars VII is on the way.

It's reported Rilean Pictures owns the rights now and is considering a live action remake, so it's possible a blu ray 3D release is being considered...

For fans to request for a blu ray 3D release asap. I'm not on fbook, but here's the only link to Rilean Pictures (formed in 2011 and related to Saban Entertainment) I could find. It had some news about Star Chaser, from 2012.

The DVD was mis-framed, if I remember correctly. Such a disappointment, as I was so looking forward to owning it.

I have fond memories of this one.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I really can't see MGM putting up the money to get this released on 3D blu-ray. The profit just isn't there, unfortunately, but it'd be great to see.

"Twilight Time" screams someone from the back row.

I watched this some years back as an anaglyph bootleg, and if a 3D-Blu-ray release happens, I'd buy it in an instant. ... however I have no intention of sitting through the anaglyph presentation again.

The good news is that a 3D DCP exists.

I contacted Hahn productions two weeks ago to inquire if there are any current plans for theatrical screenings, or a 3D Blu-ray release, but haven't heard back.

I've always wanted to see this one in 3D. I'm not surprised the 3D is strong - it was from the 80's, after all. The 80's 3D films may not have been as good as the 50's, but they still offered strong 3D - far stronger than the films we get these days.

I'd love to see this get a 3D release but I can't imagine it ever happening.

Thanks for that link. Latest I heard was that the rights are available for global distribution.

Starchaser

Starchaser: The Legend of Orin was the world’s first stereoscopic 3-D animated feature. Now, digitally re-mastered in 3-D for projection in state-of-the-art digital theaters, Starchaser is available for global distribution. This groundbreaking animated 3-D sci-fi adventure has attained cult status among its many fans around the world. Starchaser is the story of young Orin, a slave from a hellish crystal mine, who digs his way up to the planet’s surface in search of a mysterious sword blade that legend says will lead his people to freedom. But rather than freedom, Orin discovers an unfamiliar universe of ruthless people and dangerous places. His journey leads him to discover that the ruler of the mine world is actually an evil android who is one step away from conquering the human race. There is only one thing in his way—Orin’s sword.

I have the field-sequential 3D DVD (or a least I had it at one time) and I don't remember any pop-out scenes but that was a long time ago. Back when we were watching these bootleg 3D DVD's on old tube TV's - the kind that are not made anymore.

There weren't a lot of pop outs, mostly that shot with the orb flying repeatedly out of the screen with "Han Solo's" captain character.

If you have a stereo 3D TV, this clip shows close to what it would look like on it. Amazing this was from 1985 or so. The clips are reversed so you actually have to flip your 3D glasses upside down... Otherwise, high medium to strong 3D in Star Chaser 3D.

Today is the official 30th anniversary of
this animated 3D classic!
November 22, 1985
(However, some in the eastern US may
have seen it in late May/early June.)
I'll be watching it in 3D on my old 32 inch
tube tv.
I Googled 'Starchaser 3-D' and found a
recent interview on therobotsvoice.com
with director Steven Hahn and writer
Jeffery Scott. Sorry I didn't make a link.
It's very interesting and covers everything
from the film's inception, why they chose
to do it in 3D, talk of a live-action update
and director Hahn supervising the restoration
of a new DCP (Digital Cinema Package)!
Let's hope for at least a limited theatrical
re-release or maybe even a 3D blu! Cheers!

Awesome news about the DCP. I'd buy this on Blu-ray 3D in a second. Very strong 3D depth and fun genre movie.

Agreed 100%. Starchaser 3D is a fun sci fi fantasy action story and awesome 3D even by today's standards for the cel animation, which is great also. The cels have volume along with the background art from what I remember seeing.

Hopefully some good news soon for a blu ray 3D release. I heard they're looking to distribute the film in theaters but hopefully for blu ray 3D most of all. Starchaser 3D would be in the top of my 3D animated collection.

Thumbs up

Agreed. I hope we get some positive news on a blu ray 3D release of StarChaser 3D in 2016. The 3D is impressive, especially for animation/computer animation of 1985 or so.

Enjoyed the movie and want this in HD stereo 3D.

It's being released on blu-ray in 2-D only. Very disappointing.

Between this, Found Footage and potentially Mission Impossible (although it seems we may have hope), this has been a flop of a week for 3d blu ray
