I need to hunt all of these titles but I can't find a definitive list. I know there's Baccano!(DVD) and Fullmetal Achemist Brotherhood, FMA:CoS movie and the OVA, Angel Beats. What else?
My opinion on this: Aniplex won. They won the lottery but taking a huge risk. Obviously they aren't going to license out shows no more since they can sell these shows themselves. They get 100% profit and charge at a higher rate. The anime market is becoming more and more like Japan. I fear that once Funimation and gang see the success of aniplex then it won't be long until they market the same strategy; sell 50 units for $100 each vs selling 100 units for $50. Let's face it. Aniplex rate is around $60 per 4 episodes. That and they only partner with rightstuf so that means no sales with place like amazon. This could kill the industry imo. Damn thing already started with this that expired today, the 8th. ![]() |

Of course this kind of thing does tend to lead to an inevitable conclusion. Unfortunate because media that is priced to sell with a decent stock often does well if its a good product.
There is also the significant overhead cost of production for dvd/bd vs streaming. And the smaller the run the higher the cost per unit. But business is business. |

Anyone here "different" enough to see rights reverting back to Aniplex as a good thing? I think there's some serious loyal fan of them here so I'm wondering. They do amazing releases and most of them are very consistant with chipbox, OST and postcard/artbook. The price are just too damn high and everything they do is limited. They pretty much force you to pay launch prices.
Based on BigOnAnime post, any title where Aniplex got a hand in will eventually expire without a chance of renewal... |

I think we probably will agree that AoA releases are the best of the best. Personally, I prefer alternatives that are cheaper since I'm borderline poor... not fast food cashier poor but not enough to keep up with AoA releases every month. I treat myself from time to time with them though.

I feel the opposite. Sentai sets are just bloated and g1 size while Funimation usually doesn't provide much in a odd packaging. The OST and packaging alone put AoA the frontrunner. They look sooooooo nice on the shelf. My only issue with them quality wise is the 2.0 non high definition audio.

I have no problem with Aniplex wanting to release shows themselves at higher prices, the problem I have is when they don't do anything with them, like Rurouni Kenshin is still just streaming, no discs in sight. And if AoA passes on a show (They can pass on a show, and they can handle only so much with 10 employees, and never get anything for free), it's screwed. Like look at my list, so many shows that are still OOP or never got licensed, and others aren't even streaming. Makes very little sense as Aniplex suddenly makes NOTHING off these properties here (I mean we're just gravy, but still...). Quote:
There's also the fact when one compares the JP release to the US one, PLENTY of content gets cut out, from video extras, to CD's, to physical extras, to entire booklets or booklet pages (Usually the interviews get cut out, and said interviews end up on the UK release instead......). Many hardcore collectors have expressed frustration with Aniplex over this in the past, and some have even avoided the AoA release just to import from Japan or the UK instead for this stuff. For their business model and the prices they charge, this shouldn't be happening. |

Yes I get it that streaming does help to gauge interest in a show. But again they should rely solely on that as it appears they do. I was a huge fan on Plastic Memories and I ever doubt we'll see a US release of that show. I don't know the streaming numbers but I'm sure they were super high. Aniplex should look to other avenues to gauge other peoples interest as well. I bombed the heck out of the Plastic Memories FB page just to try to get them to say anything about a stateside release and got anything. It was as if they were just using the site to let people know about upcoming episodes and that was it. A complete waste to for fans to show their support if Aniplex isn't going to bother to read and answer back. |

That's my beef with Aniplex - even if it's only a few print runs, please just release what you license! I was so excited when Mushishi was announced for a second season, and the fact that it looks like it'll never be released on disc makes me very sad. Heck, at this point, I'd be willing to give them $300 per set, just so I could have it (this series has always been one of my faves). If only they slapped subs on the JP releases.

It is indeed very tragic we may never see the rest of Mushishi on-disc. Hell, we won't even see the movie which isn't even legally streaming, you can only see it via fansubs.
I'll never understand many of Aniplex's actions that cause them to make LESS MONEY. Do you hate money or something Aniplex? >Is still ticked about no subs on Garden of Sinners: Recalled Out Summer JPBD on a series that OVERPERFORMS (Import sold out before release from less than 2 months of pre-order, DVD LE sold out in less than a year), such a wasted opportunity. |

I know this isn't going to be a popular comment, but if there's a show that really needs an AoA release, it's Brotherhood. I watched the first two episodes with two friends the other week, and it's really soft looking. Not in a way that was intended by animators either, most definitely. It's very obviously early FUNi. A Japanese-mastered release of this show would look great, and be way, way too expensive
