20th Century Fox The Abyss (1989) (Remastered) TBA

At Comic-Con, we finally got some actual news about an upcoming Blu-ray of The Abyss, and it comes form the man himself

Quote:
SAN DIEGO — While promoting the 30th anniversary DVD/Blu-ray release of “Aliens” at Comic-Con Saturday, director James Cameron explained why his “Avatar” series needs the scope of the three sequels he announced at Cinema-Con in April. He also finally dropped details on a Blu-ray release of his 1989 sci-fi film “The Abyss.”

“We’ve done a wet-gate 4K scan of the original negative, and it’s going to look insanely good,” Cameron said. “We’re going to do an authoring pass in the DI for Blu-ray and HDR at the same time.”

He said to expect that some time early next year. In the meantime, the 30th anniversary “Aliens” DVD/Blu-ray hits shelves Sept.

- Variety

Also with regards to this thread:
[Show spoiler]I'm sure some here, in particular one member I have in mind who always trolls me, will be whining about this being made in the main section, but I don't see any reason why mods should move it considering the director himself confirmed a Blu-ray release, and even put up a time frame for its release. Threads have been made with far less concrete info. Thanks

Sounds good to me! Looks like they've re-done whatever efforts they made before?

I think Cameron saying they are aiming a Blu-ray-ray (and likely UHD) for early 2017 is official enough. Certainly more than some threads posted in this section. If it were a rumor, or hearsay, or not from Cameron directly then I would say it was too speculative, but we have specific info about a 4K scan and plans for release.

I know a lot of people have been looking forward to this one, so I'm happy for all you fans that it seems to really be coming, for real this time. Me, I like the movie but don't love it so I can wait patiently.

I've never seen it, but there are HD scenes from it in Cameron's Deepsea Challenge documentary, which I watched aboit 2 weeks back , and it got me really interested in wanting to see it.

Interesting, I never really thought of it as horror, more sci-fi. I don't think there's much "scary" about it at all, maybe some mildly eerie atmosphere here and there before we find out what the aliens are and what they want.

Some people seem to throw out "horror" as a genre label for any genre film without a lot of jokes and levity.

It's certainly more solid information than some things, but still far from official. I do hope it's true though since I haven't seen this in many years when I last watched my DVD copy on an old CRT set.
