This is currently showing on the Sony Movie Channel on demand in the U.S (in 2D). I'm wondering if Sony might license it to Twilight Time for 3D blu-ray..the only thing is it's only 40 minutes (most IMAX titles are the same length and get releases on the plus side).

I remember Shout Factory releasing a number of IMAX-type titles on 3D Blu-ray that included Humpback Whales, Flight Of The Butterflies, Journey To Space, Wonders Of The Arctic and The Last Reef.
It would be great if some 3rd party would release Wings of Courage along with some other not-yet-released 3D IMAX titles. |

I remember seeing it in a IMAX theater in Hollywood then. He had headsets with 3D active glasses that were also including tiny speakers where we could hear the main character's thoughts.
i saw it again in an IMAX theater in France where it was just in 3D without this great mental voice feature. I'd love to have a 3D Blu Ray indeed for this one. It was directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud (name of the rose, the bear, quest for fire...) |

Funny you should bump this thread as I was thinking about this movie the other day. I remember the movie and 3-D being really good.
If things ever settle down at the 3-DFA, maybe they can look into a compilation blu ray of IMAX 3-D films. They might be able to fit 3 or 4 movies on a single disc. I'd buy that. ![]() |

Considering Shout!FACTORY did not complement the 4K UHD BD release of the last, great IMAX film Aircraft Carrier with the 3D Blu-ray, it unfortunately looks as if they don't pursue 3D any longer.

It would have been useful if Sony had created a digital 3D master of this back when they were actually promoting 3D. Sounds like it would have been excellent demo material, as most native Imax 3D is.
I didn't have the opportunity to see Wings of Courage, but I was lucky to see Across The Sea of Time, which was released the same year, also by Sony. Like Wings of Courage, a narrative (rather than documentary) Imax 3D film. I also remember the active 3D system they used at the time; quite heavy and uncomfortable, but impressive results. There are a number of Imax 3D films that I had hoped would make it to 3D-Bluray... for which I am still waiting. I wish I could be optimistic about it. It'd be a shame if they are never seen in 3D again. All that native Imax resolution would even make a strong argument for a 3D UHD format. Maybe there'll be a chance if that ever comes about. |
