Default PS3 Error: "This is an invalid disc" & freezing

I have gotten the following errors in the last 24 hours:

1. "This is an invalid disc"
2. The system freezes during the PS3 menu
3. The picture freezes during playback

I thought I needed a software update, but my PS3 told me I had the most current updates.

I tried a quick format, then restarted the PS3. I tried another movie and I got the "invalid disc" error again.

The system played movies fine yesterday. Now my PS3 won't play COD4, The Prestige, Transporter, or Shooter. All give me the "invalid disc" error.

HELP!

It is possible you have an HD DVD. WB got some of the Harry Potter discs mixed up. They accidentally but HD DVD discs in the Blu-ray cases for some titles.
Check this out first, and try a different movie.

No offense ya'll, but I wouldn't have posted this without trying other movies. Thanks anyway.

My PS3 won't play COD4, The Prestige, Transporter, or Shooter. All give me the "invalid disc" error.

I had the exact same problem a year ago, the drive is basically f*cked. BDs would freeze about 30 min into the movie no matter what disc it was, after that it wouldn't load others at all. Games would freeze now and then, DVDs would never freeze though. Call Sony and tell them problem and if you're still under the warranty and you have the receipt they will overnight you an empty box to return your system, cables and controller. They should send you out a new system.

Thanks Miked924. That is what's happening with my system. Will they respond if I emailed them? I didn't want to wait on the phone for the projected 15 minutes for a Sony agent to pick up.

Also, I just have the Gamestop Gift receipt. Will that suffice?

You're going to have to call them unfortunately, the wait may be a little long but you want to take care of this with someone on the phone. As long as the receipt shows proof it was purchased in the last year but I guess you should probably check with them. Make sure they know you want to swap out your system for a new one because restoring factory settings will not fix this.

First of all, you originally only stated Harry Potter, and that is a known problem, I was just trying to isolate the issue and see if that was it or not.
Now that other movies are involved, the last thing to check is if other disc types, like PS3 games and CDs and even DVDs have the same or similar problems.
IF SO, then you have a bad drive. Sony will fix it, or you can exchange it if it is a fairly new purchase. This is a rare problem, but it does happen.
If the games and cds and dvds play fine, then it sounds like a motherboard issue or some other more complicated matter. Either way Sony will either fix it or you can exchange it.

A Gift receipt will at least help you exchange it, but I don't know if Sony will accept them, but they must do something for gifts as I am sure they have a number of PS3s in for repairs, etc. after the holidays.

Good Luck.

Got through to SOny faster than the projected time, and they are going to replace my system for free.

5-10 business days to get the return box then
10-14 business days to get replacement unit. PERFECT!

I got Man on Fire, From Hell, and Deja Vu in the mail today and won't get to watch them until mid March!

Like I said when that happened to me they overnighted me a box, I packed it up the next day, dropped it off the next afternoon at UPS and I already had a shipping confirmation that night. There's no way they had it at that point obviously but I think once they saw UPS had it scanned then shipped out the new one. So pretty much 7 days from my first phone call I had the new system. I was really impressed with them!

Got a UPS notification from SSC. I assume that means Sony Service Center or something. Delivery is for the 11th of February. That is faster than expected! Maybe I'll be watching Man on Fire this month after all.

Yeah man I told you they were quick, I'm sure if you send it out the next day you'll have the new system by the end of the week or beginning of the next. I had a UPS shipping confirmation for the new system being shipped to me a few hours after I dropped the the busted one off at UPS. They didn't even wait to receive my old one before they sent out the new one, good customer service in my book!

I got my PS3 back from Sony today and was wondering...

Did I hear or read something about waiting 24 hours before turning it on to prevent condensation from messing up the system? It is cold and raining outside so should I let the system acclimate to the inside temp?
