Default Rich Teer's Audio System

Hi all,

Some people have expressed an interest in seeing my turntable/audio system, so I thought I'd post a few pics. I've posted them here rather than the Home Theater Pics thread because I don't have a HT as such yet. I need to add a TV and surround sound decoder (plus a few amps and speakers!) to the stuff shown here before it would be worthy of the title "home theatre".

Enjoy!

My music room:

My turntable:

My turntable and preamp:

My power amps and speakers:

Preamp closeup:

Rear speaker closeup (to show clear binding posts and Nordost Frey speaker cable):

Wow. That's a nice stereo setup you've got there. And you're right. That is not a home theater system.

Thanks!

The TV stand is a place holder for whatever Pioneer Elite Kuro I eventually get my hands on. It's a Bello 65" rack, so that's the size of TV I'm planning to put on it eventually. My PS3 and 32" 1080p Sharp LCD TV (I know, I know!) are upstairs.

That is a sweet TT setup

And I like your choice of record to display; I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Mark and co will give 'Love over Gold' the same treatment they did with 'Brothers in Arms' (meaning a surround remix for DVDA or SACD).

I imagine you spend a lot of time in that room. Those ML's are the ones you are thinking about ??? How do you like them ???

The TT makes me want to get in the game. If I only had the space.

Looks great !!!

Brothers in Arms was also recently remastered as two 180g LPs. I'd like to see Love over Gold get that treatment, especially if they were 45 RPM pressings!

Yes, I do spend quite a lot of time in that room! :-)

The MLs in that photo are the Vantages (the same my friend Ken (RUR) has), but I have my eye on the next model up, the Spire. Currently, the model above the Spire is the $20K CLX, but that is beyond my current budget. My dealer had a pair of Vantages, so I borrowed them thinking that if I liked them, I'd like the Spire. Well, the Vantages are fantastic, so I can't wait to get the Spires! To do due diligence, I might have a listen to some other speakers in the $5K to $8K price range, but to be honest, the Spire would be a pretty safe blind buy for me!

It's a great game to get into, but it gets expensive at this level. You can't buy them new now, but to replace the turntable and arm would be roughly $20K to $25K, and the cartridge (currently a Lyra Parnassus) would be another $5K or so. But for less than half of that one could get a really nice world-class turntable.

You can say Ken and I are quite familiar and he is a great friend to have.

Can't wait to see what you decide on the speakers. Either way you look at it I'm sure it will be right for you.

If I do get into the TT game it will be sometime down the road. I really need a dedicated space. This "habit" is definitely an expensive one. It's a good thing I have my current home and automobiles paid for. If I can't afford it out-right I don't buy it.

Pretty nice, huh? Spire can only be better. Thought about some curly maple Summits today, but I laid down until the urge passed....

There are tons of songs that I would have on my favourites list, but I think Telegraph Road would be right at the top. It is a masterpiece!

Who needs HT with a wonderful 2 channel rig like that?

My vinyl rig is nothing compared to yours, but it serves me well.

That is BEYOND sweet, richteer! Absolutely stunning setup and I couldn't even imagine the quality and purity of sound it reproduces.

Thanks for all the kind comments, guys!

To answer BTF's (rhetorical) question: I like to watch movies, so I'd still like to get a 5.1 system shoe horned into this room (7.1 won't fit). As much as I love movies, I think 2-channel audio will have a higher priority to me.

And John: It was mostly the 2-channel advice thread (the one where you were looking to spend some serious bucks on a vinyl front end) that prompted me to start this thread. I thought I'd better establish my credentials, given how much I was advocating certain bits of gear! :-) If you're ever out West, let me know and we'll try to arrange a get together.

Most of my family is out in Calgary, so a side-trip to beautiful BC and specifically Kelowna wouldn't be out of the question! I'll keep you posted for sure when I head out to see them.

Hi Rich,

Nice system and turntable set up. Right now Chris Brady of Teres Audio is preparing my Certus 450 along with the new (still in Prototype form) Teres Tonearm (I am getting the first beta arm). Additionally I am having Soundsmith prepare one of their Strain Gauge 410 phono preamp and phono cartridge made for my analog system.

No problem John. The biggest holdup right now is the Soundsmith Strain Gauge. Soundsmith only makes about 20 a year and I am # 4 on the list. Hopefully, it will be completed by years end. That gives Chris Brady time to further work on his tonearm design. Once everything is completed, Chris will fly out from the Denver area to install the complete turntable system in Pennsylvania.

That would be nice (and I would get it as well, since there is no DVDA or SACD in sight).

Did you get the BIA remasters?

Absolutely. It was Mark Knopfler's finest hour IMHO.
